View Full Version : Porsche Naming
Been wondering about this a long time. What do Porsche names mean? Whats the sequence of numbers in their race cars mean? What are the 996 and 997? Are they just the latest iterations of the 911 or special models? What exactly are the 911 GT1, GT2, and GT3 models? Anything else you know about Porsche names would be appreciated. Hope this isn't a repost I did a few searches and came up with nothing.

It kinda is a repost...but who cares! :D
Carrera means race in spanish
Cayman is named after the Caiman
Cayenne is named after a french town i belive...or the pepper:D
Gt1 was a homolgated 911 le mans racer
Gt2 is a stripped out more powerfull turbo (race version kinda)
Gt3 is race version or track version whatever of the 911 (non turbo)
(RS versions are even more track ready and are usually lighter)
(RSR and Cup versions are race cars sold to private investors)
And 996/997 are the newest iterations of the 911, 997 being the newer, anything before 1975 or 89 (depending on who you ask) was just a 911, then came 930,(930 is kinda weird is was built at the same time as the 911 but was better basically/top of the line) 964, 993, 996,and 997
356 porsche's first car, based on beetle
550 Spyder/RS was a sports car built in the fifties based on a custom open top 356, 718 was succesor
928 is a v8 grand tourer (front engined)
924, 944, 968 are 4 cylinder front engined Porsches, (924 is oldest 968 is newest kinda like 996 997 etc)
912 was cheaper alternative to 911 in 60s replaced by the 914
959 is a homolagated rally car/super car made by porsche, rivaled only by F40, pioneered Porsches AWD
Hope that helps :D anymore questions? (ill edit my post to answer all i can.)

obviously the most important models have a 'GT' somewhere in the name, or '935', 'slant nose'

I thought the Cayman was named so because it's similar to that reptile- small, but still packs a nasty bite...
And the Cayenne I'm pretty sure was named after the pepper- spicy, and over the top :D

Cayenne is the name of the French Guiana (Africa) capital. And I believe there is a river there with the same name too.
GT3 is the homologation version for the GT3 racing class.
GT2 is the homologation version for the GT2 racing class.
GT1 is the homologation version for the GT1 racing class.

The numbered Porsche models are for the design number coming from the designers, ie the 356 was the three hundreth and fifty sixth design (though not necessarily prototype) to be considered, as was the 914, 944, 968 etc. with their respective numbers, and when they got around to the 993s and such Porsche started thinking, 'whoa, we're going to hit a thousand soon.' So after the 996 that style of naming died, hence the 997 isn't really the first concept after the 996, it's just the logical next number up to sell the car. The Boxster design was somewhere in the thousands, as well as the Cayenne and Cayman, which explains why Porsche doesn't really number their cars anymore.

The Boxster is 987 and the older generation was the 986.

Porsche 911 was originally presented as 901 but due to pressure from Peugeot, which had long been using three digit type indications with a zero in the middle (and still does) the name was changed into 911. (It might still have been design number 901 though). Peugeot did not object to the use of 904,906 and 908 for the Porsche racing models from the sixties.
In order to create more confusion design numbers do not necessarily have to relate to complete cars. It may also be a geabox or so. A complete overview can be found in Karl Ludvigsen's book on Porsche: "Excellence was expected"
