View Full Version : Weekly (Friday Nights) Car Show

I've posted here before about the weekly car gathering I go to. I never know what will be there.. I've even seen a tank there!
Last Friday, there was a red Ferrari 4.1 Automatic, so I took a few photos since I always bring my camera.
Does anyone know what year Ferrari it is? I'm guessing around '73 or '74. I didn't see the owner, so I couldn't ask.

The badge says it's a 400i, they were produced between 1979 and 1984. There were 1294 units produced.

That's right... 400i. I don't know where I got "4.1" from; that's what I thought it said.
1979-'84? Okay, thanks for the info.

Here are some general photos of the show. It is a year-'round show but rain cancels. Cold weather and wind doesn't, though. I have stopped by there when it's barely 50 degrees outside and windy, and there are still cars and people there.

Furthermore, 400 x 12 = 4800cc.

Automatic = lose, though. :(

IIRC the first experiment was in a 365 2+2 with a GM automatic by an american dealer. Then from the 400, Ferrari began offering automatic transimision options from the factory on their 4-seater cars, right up to the 456 M GTA. The flappy paddle gearbox was first offered in the 355, and since then it has become increasingly popular, to the point that it has even replaced the automatic option in the current 4-seater Ferrari, the 612 Scaglietti.

Maybe they figured they could increase their sales if they offered an automatic. And maybe it did.

Is there any other reason why they would add something to their line-up?

Well, yes, the didn't offer an automatic because it was more fun or better... ;)

A bit like the current Maserati Quattroporte only this time the automatic really is better.

I've actually seen several Ferraris at this car show. But I'm not surprised; it is a car show/display afterall. Technically, it's for 1974 and older cars, but I've seen newer ones.

Here is the tank I mentioned. As I said, it drove in off the street! I don't see how that could be street legal.

A '72 Chevelle and a '67 350 Camaro. (I don't know what engine the Chevelle had).

The next photo shows three muscle cars side-by-side.

In addition to the Friday night car show, there was another one today. At the California Car Cover store.
The first photo is a Ford GT.
It was intereting to look at, but I would rather have the '68 Hemi Dart (photos #2 and 3) and the '68 Hemi Barracuda (photo #4).
BTW, the Dart had a "historical vehicle" license plate and the Barracuda had a plate with current tags (due Feb., 2008). So contrary to myth, the Super Stock Hemi Darts/'Cudas could be registered for street use.

Very rare to see not one, but two, '68 Hemi Super Stock Mopars!

Its not myth but fact that they were sold untitled and therefore prima facie unregisterable. That some have since been 'slipped through the system' and now wear plates does not change history

In similar vein to those hemi cars, only nine '74 Leyland P76 Force 7V coupes were ever sold, none at retail level. Like the hemis the Force 7V model never achieved type-compliance and thus none of them could be legally registered for road use. Hence all 7Vs were auctioned off with no compliance plates, as 'unregisterable job lots'. In the intervening decades some owners have managed to sneak a few of these cars through rego but it doesn't change the fact that at prime level they were and still remain technically illegal for road use, including insurance ramifications etc

The end fact is that the could be registered even though the technically "couldn't." They did have functional windshield wipers and head/tail lights. I would say it changes history... cars that were sold untitled are driving (legally) on the street! Someone on a Mopar message board owns a street-driven/street-legal '68 Hemi Barracuda and at a Mopar-only show a few years ago, I saw another two '68 Hemi Darts which drove into the show.

There were approximately 80 '68 Hemi Darts and 80 '68 Hemi Barracudas built, at a price between $4,500 and $5,000.

And here is a car belonging to one of the "regulars."
A '72 Plymouth Duster 340. It actually has a built 360 cu in V-8 which has dynoed at 420 horsepower and 450 lbs-ft torque. With a 3.55:1 rear axle ratio, it runs 1/4 miles in the 12-second bracket. Its relatively light weight (2,970 lbs) really helps in the 1/4 mile runs. This car belongs to the original owner; the original 340 engine is being stored because it is a built engine, too, even more so than the 360 and it's kind of wild for street use.

"Built" means modified... usually internally (pistons, cam, crankshaft, etc) as well as externally (carb, headers, intake manifold, ignition upgrades, etc).

The engine in the Duster requires high octane... the owner mixes 91 octane pump gas with 111 octane (at $8.25/gallon).

"rebuilt" or "upgraded" would then be more appropriate words to use...

and with that he gets only 420 BHP out of an over 5 liter engine????

I'm not sure; I would have to ask him, but I think that is the rear wheel hp on the dyno. The "gross" hp would probably be about 480 hp.

Honda S500 with a 9.500 rpm redline ftw
Initially introduced with a 492cc engine, the specifications read like those from a Formula 1 race car;

double overhead camshafts,
four carburetors,
needle roller bearing crankshaft,
9,500 rpm redline.
Final drive was by oil bath chains to the rear wheels.
Four wheel independent suspension was achieved using torsion bars in the front,
diagonally attaching coil-over-shock strut units to the rear of each chain case.

When the name Cadillac is spoken I think of (for the classic ones) a big & roomy car, with a powerful engine with tons of low-end torque (rated at 525 ft-lbs for the '69), glamorous styling (no chopped off trunk or stubby hood like the new ones have), lots of real metal and chrome, a smooth and quiet ride and plush interior. :)

BTW, you wouldn't ZZzzZZ in my '69 after I do a few full throttle starts. :D

A 1965 Thunderbird, to be precise, of which just under 75,000 were made. The real rarity in that picture is the 1969 Chrysler Three Hundred next to it; they made less than 2,000 Three Hundred convertibles that year.

A 1965 Thunderbird, to be precise, of which just under 75,000 were made. The real rarity in that picture is the 1969 Chrysler Three Hundred next to it; they made less than 2,000 Three Hundred convertibles that year.

A '65, okay I'll remember. I think I have a pic of that 300 convertible which is why I didn't snap a photo of it on Friday. Maybe if it's there next Friday, I'll take a few pics of it.

Great stuff, please keep sharing. :)

Okay, I'll see what is there later this week (Friday).

A lot of cars again at this week's car show.
Plenty of Corvettes... maybe it was "Corvette Night."
Here are some of them...
Photo:
#1. '63 'Vette (I think it's a '63... it's hard to keep track of all the cars)
#2. 327-cu-in engine of '63 'Vette

I think that was the best thing to do....

Yeah, I think so. It sure was an odd-looking vehicle.

Something not right about these two Chevy Novas.
The one in the first two photos has "427" emblems on the fenders and the one in the last two photos has "396" emblems, but the distributor on both are in the rear of the engine. I think the distributor on big block Chevys are on the front of the engine, like on my Cads.

Here is a car not seen around here much. A 1961 Zodiac. A British Ford, I believe.

There was a Lincoln Town Car (a '94, I believe) and a Mercedes E350 parked next to each other, so I took some pics.
I like that long rear overhang of the Town Car, looks more elegant. :)

It might be slightly more elegant if they parked within the lines ;)

doesn't help the E350 has the worlds worst vanity plate.

It's a very informal car show. :D

Yeah, that certainly doesn't help. Neither do those "bug-eyed" front headlights. ;)

Yeah, unfortunately it's in fashion. I like how you describe it- "stunned mullet look!"

I haven't posted more cars in a while so here are some.
These were at yesterday's show...
The first car in the first two photos was hard to identify. Obviously a kit car; it had no emblems at all. According to one bystander, it is a Ultima.

The next one is a Chevy El Camino with a big supercharger.

After that is a silver '76 Cadillac Hearse. My '69 Fleetwood is in the foreground.

Definitely an Ultima. Looks like a GTR 800 but I'm not sure of that.

The last few gathering were rained out.
Some interesting cars at yesterday's show...
Here are two photos of a Porsche Spyder and two photos of two separate Z06 Corvettes...

It gets dark very early this time of the year at car shows, so I had no choice but to take these pics at night.

I am curious, too. I didn't see the owner around, so I couldn't ask.

There was another car show out here today. Hosted by California Car Cover... californiacarcover.com (http://www.californiacarcover.com)

1. Dodge Hemi-Challenger
2. 350 Camaro
3. '67 Corvette
4. '57 Chevys are common out here, but this is a real nice one.
5. Pontiac Tempest, 1966?

This was at the car show last Friday. A 1969 427 Yenko Camaro which is almost finished (it still needs a complete repaint).

It looks like it will be a very nice (and attention-getting) muscle car when it is finished.

Several cars of interest at last night's show.

1-2. A 396/425 hp Corvette. Looks like a '65 (that was the first year they had a 396).
3-4. 1967 Plymouth GTX. 440 engine. Nice interior!
5-6. 1964 Pontiac GTO 389 engine.

The weekly car show has a new location. For those in the L.A. area, it is now in West Hills. At the intersection of Saticoy St and Woodlake Ave.
A good crowd last Friday and they say it grows each week.

There was a Batmobile car there. According to someone, an actual George Barris-built Batmobile. It even had flames shooting out of the rear. Here are some (night) photos I took...
