Audi R18

Audi extends motorsport commitment

New Audi R18 for the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours
Dual project in the DTM
Endurance races with the Audi R8 LMS

Audi aims to continue its string of victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a completely new LMP1 sports car development. Since its debut in 1999, the brand with the Four Rings has won the world’s most important endurance race as many as nine times with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. In doing so, Audi has equaled this feat in the race’s roll of honor with Ferrari. With the new R18, which was presented at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt on the evening of Friday, December 10, 2010, Audi is aiming for its tenth Le Mans success in 2011.

For the first time since 1999, Audi will contest Le Mans with a closed coupe again. "In the future, aerodynamic efficiency will be even more important at Le Mans than it was in the past,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "A closed car has clear advantages in this respect. Our computer simulations have been confirmed in the wind tunnel and during initial track tests.”

Significantly smaller engines than those used before will be prescribed at Le Mans in 2011 as the rule makers aim to achieve a substantial reduction of engine power. By opting for a 3.7-liter V6 TDI unit, Audi retains the diesel concept that saw its first victorious fielding in 2006. "From our point of view, the TDI continues to be the most efficient technology,” says Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. "There are good reasons why the share of TDI units among Audi’s production models is as high as it is.”
Through the innovative V6 TDI engine for the Le Mans 24 Hours, motorsport is yet again performing pioneering work for the production arm at Audi where there is a growing trend towards smaller, more economical but yet powerful engines.

Another new development is the six-speed transmission in the R18 which has been specifically modified for use with the smaller engine.

Numerous detailed solutions

With regard to the chassis Audi Sport wants to live up to its promise, expressed in the brand’s "Vorsprung durch Technik” tagline. Unlike those of the closed Le Mans prototypes, the carbon fiber monocoque of the R18 does not consist of two halves but features a single-component design. This saves weight and increases stiffness.

For the development of the closed R18, engineers at Audi Sport were able to draw on the experiences gained in 1999 with the R8C and in 2003 with the LMP1 of the corporate "sister brand” Bentley that was victorious at Le Mans. "Also the Audi A4 DTM, which for example, features a heated windshield, allowed us to shorten the development cycle with respect to the ventilation of the cockpit, the doors and the heating of the windshield,” explains Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Engineering at Audi Sport.

The chassis and aerodynamics package contains a lot of know-how from the R8, the R10 TDI and the R15 TDI whereas the fitting of identically sized front and rear wheels is new to an Audi Le Mans sports car. This configuration allows a more balanced weight distribution.

The R18’s headlights, which are the first to completely consist of LEDs with optimized amount of light, are a technical highlight. The new generation of headlights was developed in close cooperation between Audi Sport and the Technical Development (TE) division of AUDI AG and by using at Le Mans, will be prepared for future use in production vehicles. Audi’s light designers had the chance to make their mark on the development as well: The LEDs of the daytime light form the shape of a "1” which is intended to inspire associations with Audi’s historic brand logo.

The Audi R18 has been designed for progressive electrification, which Audi Sport is planning to drive forward step by step. "But efficiency is always the crucial factor for us,” says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "No matter which form of energy recovery we may choose the key aspect for Audi – in motorsport as well as on the production side of the house – is that it provides a true advantage.”

The development of the new Audi R18 started in mid 2009. The V6 TDI engine has been running on the dynamometers since the summer of 2010. The R18, with Allan McNish at the wheel, completed its first test on a racetrack at the end of November.

The racing debut of the Audi R18 is planned for the Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) 6 Hours on May 8. Prior to the event, the new prototype will be able to do its first laps on the race track at Le Mans during the official test day on April 24 and gather important data for the race on June 11 and 12.

Audi is planning to field three Audi R18 cars at Le Mans, which will be entered by Audi Sport Team Joest, the most successful Le Mans team of all time. In addition, Audi Sport Team Joest will contest the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), consisting of a total of seven endurance races on three continents (including the Le Mans 24 Hours) with two cars. At the opening race at Sebring on March 19, the team will use two "R15 plus plus” cars. "Sending the R18 into a race at such an early point in time would be difficult in terms of logistics and interfere with our development program,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

Dual project in the DTM

In parallel to the commitment with the R18 in the sports prototype class, Audi aims to bring the DTM title back to Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. As the DTM technology freeze continues in 2011 the main focus for the engineers at Audi Sport during the winter will be placed on development work with the DTM’s new exclusive tire partner. "In 2010 the tires were a really crucial topic which caused us to fall a little behind our competitor,” says Dr. Martin Mühlmeier. "This mustn’t happen again.”

As before, Audi Sport is again planning to field a total of nine vehicles entered by the proven Audi Sport teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Rosberg. The driver line-up will only be decided in January of next year.

But not only the twelve DTM events (including one show race at the Olympic Stadium in Munich) have to be tackled in 2011. In addition, Audi Sport is working on the successor model of the current Audi A4 DTM, internally designated as the "R17,” for the new Technical Regulations that will come into effect in 2012. The first tests are planned for next summer.

Customer sport to be expanded and restructured

AUDI AG’s customer sport program that was launched in 2009 will be expanded and restructured. The responsibility for the further development of the Audi R8 LMS, sales of the vehicles and technical support for the worldwide customer and importers teams has been delegated to quattro GmbH.

Whereas the main focus was previously on Europe, the Asian market will be served as well in 2011.

The participation in the 24 Hour races at the Nürburgring (June 25/26) and at Spa-Francorchamps (July 30/31) spearheads the customer sport commitment with the Audi R8 LMS. Audi will also support entries at other endurance races such as the 12 Hours at Bathurst (Australia) as part of its customer sport commitment.

In addition, Audi is planning a modular customer sport concept that will include an endurance version of the TT RS and a GT4 version of the Audi TT. The TT RS has already successfully completed first runs on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and will continue to be developed during the winter. A concept of the TT GT4 was presented at the DTM race meeting in Shanghai. Delivery of the first customer vehicles is planned for 2012.

Nice to look at... and from what i can see, the drivetrain won't be a weak, either. I'm still waiting for Peugeot's take. Looks like the next season of LM will be very interesting.

I'd have prefer old cars and more competitors then new rockets sort of each year and only Pug and Audi fighting for top honor. Let's hope Aston's car will be up to the task.

Look wise, I find it rather unpleasant.
Today I was looking at the R10, the Pug 908 and the BMW V12 LMR, among others. The BMW was definitely the better looking, but I still think Group C cars were even better looking.
Pointless when you're talking about racing cars, still...

I actually like that a lot.

For some odd reason, these photos look out of place to me, like they're photos of scale models. Maybe it's all the carbon fibery looking plastic.

Plain carbon looks cool the first time, but race car needs their war paint to look finished....

Its an interesting car, it reminds me of a Russian sub for some reason...

It looks a bit "chintzy" for a racecar in my opinion. I'm a bit irritated with Audi's fascination with headlights, most likely not helped by certain rivals copying for all they're worth, not to mention the aftermarket LED imitation light strips the ricer set is having a blast with at the moment.

Still, it will probably at the very least contend for top honors. Again.

I'm really hoping Aston decides to ape Audi's headlights and have their new car's headlights display "007" in LEDs instead of the "1" form of this car, just for the giggles.

And happy 2011 everyone.

The R18 looks absolutely amazing, far more radical than any previous Audi LMP car. It looks like something from a far more advanced planet than earth with those LEDs and aerodynamics. Every year the rules for diesels at Le Mans get stricter and stricter yet the manufacturers always seem to be a step ahead. It will be really interesting to see how quick the R18 will be in comparison to the R10 and R15. That output of 149bhp per litre is amazing for a diesel. It's only 40bhp down on the R15 despite having lost 4 cylinders and 1800cc of displacement, which is mind boggling. I wonder what the torque figure is? The ACO hasn't wanted cars to be capable of anything faster than 3.30 for about 4 years now... It doesn't look like they're going to get their wishes in 2011 either. We haven't even seen Peugeot's effort yet, I can't wait till June when I'll plunk myself down on the couch and switch on Eurosport for about 18 out of 24 hours.

Yes, we have... sorta - 90X.

2011 Peugeot 90X - Images, Specifications and Information (http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/4621/Peugeot-90X.html)

Details of 90X will be revealed this Thursday: From 5pm until 11pm on February 3, 2011, Peugeot will turn 136 avenue des Champs Elysées, Paris, France, into a major motor racing attraction. Team Peugeot Total's drivers and technicians will be on hand to meet the public, while Peugeot's latest endurance racing challenger – still known under its codename 90X – will take centre stage.

I think it is a shame that there is not really a strong gasoline contender. It is also kind of hard to evaluate how much better diesels are as a big name factory team has not run a gasoline car (I would say AM is not spending Audi/Peugeot money on their car).

RacingManiac
01-30-2011, 05:48 PM
I won't be saying that just yet....Wirth/HPD for what little amount of money they are spending were punching pretty high above their weight class before for the P2 car. Now that they are in the P1 again it'd be interesting to see their 2011 car thats supposed to be quite a departure from the P2 car which it will be based on, and how that leads to their 2012 car which is supposed to be quite interesting...

And its still not yet known if in fact the new Peugeot will be a diesel again...I don't know the math in the formula and how they will work out right now but its not known for sure at this stage if in fact the diesel will still have the advantage...

I had forgotten that Peugeot may run a gasoline engine.

The issue with the ARX was that it was not really designed with Le Mans the primary goal, was it?

RacingManiac
01-31-2011, 06:06 AM
Not the old P1(ARX-02a) car, but the new P1(ARX-01e) will be infact based on their P2(ARX-01) car that was born from the Courage chassis....Its interesting that they chose that route since it means they need minimum changes because the new P1 engine rule is infact basically the old P2 engine rule(with maybe a bit more power I'd imagine), so they are basically re-classing their P2 car(with ballast probably) and runs bigger tires, which would require them to re-do the bodywork. I wonder though if they would go the whole way and do the same size tire front and rear again...

I thought I may have read somewhere in the past that the peugeot 90X will have a 3.0 Twin turbo V6 petrol. However this must be wrong because the rules don't allow that. Ah well, only 1 day to wait until all is revealed.

A World Champion featuring further development: For the 2013 season, the Audi R18 e-tron quattro has been improved in the areas of aerodynamics, thermal management, lightweight design and active safety.

The Audi R18 e-tron quattro is only starting into its second racing season in 2013 – but has already become a legend. Like the Audi R10 TDI, the first hybrid race car to win the Le Mans 24 Hours was voted one of the ten most important Le Mans race cars of all time by an Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) judging panel.

Technical milestones at the 24 Hours of Le Mans are nothing unusual for Audi. The brand with the four rings has consistently been using the endurance classic to race new technologies – TFSI, TDI, VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry), ultra-lightweight design or now e-tron quattro are good examples of the brand’s pioneering spirit in motorsport.

Through the intelligent combination of a conventionally powered rear axle with an electrically powered front axle the Audi R18 is transformed into an e-tron quattro – the first Audi race car not to be exclusively powered by an internal combustion engine. The system located in the front of the car consists of two drive shafts and a motor generator unit (MGU) including a gear mechanism which is supplied with energy by the electric flywheel accumulator mounted alongside the driver in the cockpit. It is charged by the MGU during braking events and returns its energy to the MGU during acceleration.

Further development of the drive system

Audi has optimized this hybrid system for 2013. The output of the electric motors has increased to more than 80 kilowatts. Thus, over 218 hp can be delivered in total. The engineers have achieved their objectives through optimized components and improved thermal management of the system. Modified internal regulators of the fully automatically controlled high-voltage system help improve efficiency. However, as before, no more than 500 kilojoules of energy may be used for acceleration between two braking zones.

While the output on the electrified front axle is higher now, the power delivered by the V6 TDI engine has decreased by around 15 kW (20 hp) to about 360 kW (490 hp). The reason is a change in the regulations. The air restrictor, which now has a diameter of 45.1 millimeters, is 0.7 millimeters smaller than it was last year.

Improved aerodynamics

The distinctive body of the R18 e-tron quattro features numerous refined details. For example, the aerodynamicists have designed the entire air flow for higher efficiency – from the front flic to the rear wing, from the radiator to the tail pipe. Winglets above the rear fenders complement the contour of the rear wing.

Another noticeable change is found in the side pods. Openings and turning vanes behind the front wheels feature a new design. They improve the ventilation of the front wheelhouses and thus air flow.

Further advances in ultra-lightweight design

Last year, Audi succeeded in integrating the hybrid system with a neutral effect on the car’s weight. The Audi R18, both in the ultra-version with a conventional internal combustion engine and as the e-tron quattro with hybrid drive, achieved the minimum dry weight of 900 kilograms.

In 2013, the hybrid sports car has yet again been revised in detail to save weight. At the same time, the regulations have raised the minimum racing weight by 1.6 percent to 915 kilograms. Audi thus has more latitude for ballast and positions it in a way that causes the race car’s center of gravity to drop to the lowest possible mid-point. As a result of shifting the static axle load, there is a positive effect on handling and braking performance as well.

Driver assistance systems for more active safety

Last year, the Audi factory drivers began to benefit from the digital rear view mirror. A roof-mounted camera covers the area behind the race car and transmits the pictures to an AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emission Diode) display.

This year, Audi has complemented this visual assistance system by two forward-pointing cameras on the roof. They capture the blind spots in the driver’s field of vision that occur on all closed LMP sports prototypes in the alignment areas of the A-pillars.

The image data is transmitted to two displays located on the right- and left-hand side of the instrument panel. As in the case of the inside mirror, Audi relies on AMOLED displays for this purpose. This technology implies that the display itself is luminous and does not require any background lighting. The advantages of AMOLED technology are low power consumption, fast switching times, high definition of moving images and advantages for night-time driving.

Innovation in lighting technology

Audi managed to move on to the next level in lighting technology as well. After the brand underscored its pioneering role on introducing LED headlights, matrix beam technology now marks the next step. It allows the light cone to be controlled for better illumination of the field of vision when the car turns. Particularly in 24-hour races the drivers clearly benefit from this increase in active safety. Due to the relief provided by the light the drivers can optimally concentrate on the race.

Recuperation: Maximum gain

The Audi R18 e-tron quattro recovers energy during braking events. The maximum recuperation depends on a set of complex rules.

When the Audi R18 e-tron quattro starts from the grid special rules apply. Hybrid sports cars are allowed to recover and re-use energy only according to a set of specific rules. The sporting regulations define general conditions as well as specifics for each of the eight race tracks on the calendar.

To be admitted as a hybrid model in the first place, an LMP race car has to cover a distance of 400 meters at a speed of 60 km/h strictly on electric power. The recovery of energy is referred to as recuperation and its delivery is called boost. If the system acts on the front axle the stored energy may only be used again above a speed of 120 km/h. Audi has opted for this type of a system. Hybrid race cars with gasoline engines may have a fuel tank capacity of 73 liters in the LMP1 class while diesel hybrid models such as the Audi R18 e-tron quattro are limited to 58 liters.

Braking energy may be recovered at any place on the track provided that the braking event lasts at least one second and deceleration exceeds 1g. At Le Mans, for example, this is the case when braking into ten corners (areas highlighted in yellow on the map).

In the subsequent boost phase (marked in green), special conditions apply for so- called braking zones. The regulations prescribe the numbers and locations of these zones for each race track. Last year, there were seven such places at Le Mans. As no more than 0.5 megajoules may be released per boosting event between two braking zones, a maximum of 3.5 megajoules of recuperated energy were re-converted into propulsion per lap.

The organization that has issued the regulations has access to the data logging system in the race car and can thus constantly check the data in real time. The amount of boost to be used depends on the electronic control strategies selected by the application engineers. These algorithms have to be firmly defined. The driver can select the boosting event via default settings.
