Good day,
We are gradually introducing new features to the site and forums, of which the supporting member setup is one. It is a paid subscription for which you'll receive a number of new features, designed to enhance your Ultimatecarpage.com experience. Most important of these is the total removal of ads for the subscribers, which together with the obvious benefits also turns Ultimatecarpage.com in one of the fastest loading sites on the internet. Yes it's the ads that cause the load times.
You can find all the details in the user control panel or by clicking here: http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/subscriptions.php?
Although the official launch of the package will most likely be on Monday, we decided it offered so many benefits that we put it online as soon as it was tested.
Thanks for your support and enjoy your stay on Ultimatecarpage.com

I looked through the list of advantages and i dont think that there are enough of them for me to pay
store up to 500 Personal Messages, create a custom user status, use larger avatars and have a 'Supporting Member' logo displayed next to all your forum messages.
who really needs 500PM's ??
youve already got your USER CP and information about you that others can see
we dont really need bigger avatars
Exclusive access to the premium forums, where you can discuss site and forum matters with your fellow premium members and the site administrators.
what are on the premuim forums ??
Cant we discuss with administators ETC on the website discussion section ?

I agree with Mustang. And also feel that excluding some people from discussion because they are not paying members defeats the purpose of a forum. As it is, I'm sure the mods and founders can PM and have private discussions. I like the idea of not having adverts though. Why not charge a $5-10 premium on the upcoming T-shirts. With something tangible a lot more people will be willing to pay, IMO.
**maybe the T-shirt design can have a 'member since 200?' designation!!
There will be more advantages offered. As Wouter said, it hasn't been officially rolled out yet. Give it time. You people have this habit of flipping out immediately over any change and then after time realizing the error in your ways.
Wouter Melissen

Mustang, the ones you mentioned are all just the additional features included. The key feature is the ad-free bit of the package, which will completely strip the site from the ads. Ads come at the expense of complex and long coding that takes a long time to load, taking them off completely leaves the bare site, which is blisteringly fast. This is hard to describe, but the load times have been decreased to almost 'instant'.
Advertising is going to get more aggressive, because of the easily attainable pop-up blockers. It's also only a matter of time before we are going to include ads on the forums as well.
I would like to stress that we decided not to take any of the current 'free' content away and move them to the subscription package, which would have been the easiest thing to do to make the subscriptions a success. However, there is a big chance that future features will only be available for the subscribers.
To wrap things up I would like to list the advantages again here:
- Complete removal of ads -> supersonic Ultimatecarpage.com
- More space in the PM-inbox, larger avatar, custom user title
- Exclusive access to the premium forums
Before Monday it will also include:
- Complete specs on all cars (where available of course), similar to the spotlight cars
I hope this explains it a little bit more.
Thanks again for your time,
Wouter Melissen

There is a fair chance that paid subscribers will get a discount on the upcoming merchandise. Charging more on the shirts does not give the buyer anything extra, this paid subscription does.

Wouter can you tell me what is on the premium forums ?? as i would be interested in knowing what exactly my money is going too,
at the moment i have no problem with the ads, im sure that it will be a bit slower than withought them but when im on the mai site - which isnt as much as the forum - i might get say 1 add poping up the whole time im on there.
Dont get me wrong im sure that this is a good idea. I agreed with the changes to the site a while ago, I agreed with the rep and everything else that has happened but i just dont think that there are enough advantages to be gained from paying.
Will there eventually be a larger amount of bandwidth or something ?

I wasn't going to say anything about it, but the discussion in this thread is pulling me into it.
First of all - Nodoby is forcing anybody to pay in here, you still get a great site and forum for free.
Second - What do you guys want for 2.99 a month? Honestly? A T-shirt? You are going to get one crappy T-shirt then.
Third - It's not so much what you get, that's why it's called "support".
Honestly I'm just signing up because I love the site and want it to keep growing. This site has provided me with tons of pics and info whenever I need them, as well as a great forum.
I'm having some problems with pay pal right now because it is the first time that I ever use it, but I'm getting it fixed tonight as soon as my dad arrives home.
Good for you. A voice of maturity.

Do I need to place the info of my Bank account in it or can I just transfer funds to pay pal without doing so just by putting my debit card information?
Also they said something about a 4 digit # coming in my next credit card statement which was needed for verifying and that it would take 3-4 days to arrive or that I could check it online in 3-4 days.
Sorry, I'm used to pay just by placing the card #.

Paypal only needs your credit card number.
The four digit # is just something for them to confirm your credit card.

Do I have to wait for them to confirm in order to be able to pay?

I think you're trying to set up an account that is able to receive money. What it does it makes two small deposits into your account (less than $1 each) and then asks you to confirm the amounts of those deposits. It's a security thing. You don't want to do that. You just want to pay some money and you should be able to do it with just your credit card.

I think it's a good idea... I'm sure that 98% of UCP'ers won't buy in, but that's not the point. The extra support is there for those who want it to have access to - not to exclude others.
I believe that funding mosly goes toward hosting/administration and content reporting (flights to car shows, etc). I'm not entirely sure though - Moderating is a volunteer job :D
It seems good to have more features (even though I already had 500 PM limits and no pop-ups because of using Mozilla :D), but I'm not really sure about a Premium forum. It's not like there's anything that we could discuss there that we couldn't anywhere else... maybe the point is just making other users curious so that they'd sign up too ;). And in that case, maybe we will have some things to discuss :D
<AAA-MOD>
10-13-2004, 12:20 PM
i hope everyone trusts us that the funding definitely isn't there to make anyone rich. i know for a fact that Wouter is continuously buying new servers (to keep the speed up), new camera equipment (to keep the quality top-knotch), and therapy sessions to keep his head straight about it all.
all of that is necessary to keep this plethora of automotive information growing.
he also assists in my travel costs to the shows i attend in North America. that may sound like a great deal for me, and the only reason that it is, is becasue i love doing it so much. i sure as hell couldn't make a living off of it yet though. if i charged for a hourly wage + travel + accomodations + expenses the site would be broke quick. we're both doing this for the love of it. i have a full-time job to take care of my necessities. this is all bonus.
all the additional funds that have been acquired over the last couple years as the site has grown has allowed us to travel a bit farther, and more often, with better equipment.
that reminds me, i need to make another therapy appointment myself. i keep seeing chrome wheels spinning around my head.
am i babbling again?
NoOne
10-13-2004, 12:50 PM
that reminds me, i need to make another therapy appointment myself.
UCP is my therapy, I haven't had the luxury of a true enthusiasts car for a few years now - married life, children and a work-related injury that left me out of work for better than a year and a half saw to that.
The time will come around for me again, but until then I can talk openly with great people who share the same passion, fantasize about cars that never make it to this side of the world, and in some cases re-live my early enthusiast days through members who are going through it the first time.
All of this is definitely worth $30 a year, especially when I see how the site has grown in the past year that I've been a member .... even more so when I consider how much time I spend on the site. :)

Ok, apparently the whole problem is because I own a debit card instead of a credit card. I'm gonna have to wait a couple of days 'till I get the thing veryfied (Don't ask me why)
Wouter, you might be confusing the 4 digits that I mentioned with the 3 digits that are in the back of the cards which is needed for registration also... (Just in case) Cause the 4# that they ask me for I can only retrieve them in a couple of days.
My dad has the whole pay pal thing and never had any problem with it (Credit card) So he doesn't really know what my problem might be.
Well, I guess I'll support as soon as I get things straight.
Thank you all for helping.

Adds come up also when you actually look into a specific car, loading pictures really goes faster (I got the experience), there also more specs available on individiual cars, a separate chapter on the drivetrain has been added.
If you maintain your credit card attitude, it will not be a long time in the future before you are going to have difficulties in buying anything. You can sign up and don't need a credit card, a bank account is enough. You'll have to setup an account and transfer money from your bank to the paypal account and then you can get your subscription.

Alright, before tomorrow's launch we are working on a final subscription feature; exclusive wallpapers. The current wallpapers, which have been on the site for well over a year now, will be replaced by eighteen new ones. All of these are exclusive Ultimatecarpage.com photography. Right now there are around ten of these completed, but we need more. If you have suggestions for cars on the wallpapers, let us know and we might get your favourite in!

Just wondering if you happen to have any Mugen modified car. Civic, S2000?
Supra, RX7 and the new NSX would be nice too (Not Mugen of course).
Ferrari 430, McLaren F1/F1 LM.

This is hard to describe, but the load times have been decreased to almost 'instant'.
I have blistering loads times already, and i have never once seen an ad or pop up on ucp, thats how my enzo thread gets so big so fast,
idno about paying for faster speed, i still have to think about it, but for now, im satisfied, i've never been on a faster loading site :)
keep up the good work :)

R1ckst4 don't diss Nandor Tancoz! My mum knows him! Shes had her photo taken with him! And besides, Helen Clark didn't ask him to be in government! And you call yourself a Kiwi.

1. About 9 percent people of NZ voted for the Green Party knowing that Nador was a candidate on the Green Party list. The NZ Govt did not "allow" him to be a member of parliament. The NZ people who voted for the Greens did.
2. Not everyone will agree that the decision to make prostitution legal is stupid. I personally do not think that the government should stick their nose into the affairs of two consenting adults. However, its a different matter if child prostitution or slavery is involved.

Enzo pictures are pretty easy to come by. I have already included two other Ferrari shots.
You do realise that these wallpapers will no longer be available for the non-paying visitors.

i dont venture into the main pages enough to be annoyed by the ads, the forums is my reason for being here, and having ADSL at home and cable at work, speed is never an issue... so its really just the extra forums that interest me... :)

You can sign up with paypal with just a bank account. It'll take a little longer, but it will work just as well. Good thing about it is that there are none of the 'risks' involved you fear using a credit card for.

Welcome to the world of check cards. Can be used like a credit card but takes the money directly from your checking account. Stops working when there's no money left. I think that in the next 50 years or less, there will no longer be paper money or checks - in the US at least. You'd better get used to plastic.
