Ute crash

This is the story as recieved-

This happened in Kalgoorlie Saturday night (10/03/07)...

VU SS torn in half @ 150kmh!!

At about 6pm tonight the Ute below was travelling down a 50kmh zone @ an
eye witness estimates between 150-200kmh. They have gone through 1 of Kalgoorlie's notorious spoon drains and launched into the air, upon bouncing back to earth something broke and the driver lost control.

They have jumped the curb and launched passenger side on into the tree pictured.

It has literally torn the ute in half, separating fuel tank, rear
firewall, tray, bumpers and tray liner.

In the photo from side on of the cab you can see the fuel tank on the
ground between the police.
The owner of the ute is just 21 and hasn't had the car for long, he was
not driving his mate was at age 17.
In one of the photos there is a Cougar can on the ground next to the car
and witnesses say they appeared to be drunk.
Initial reports were the owner was out of the ute yelling at his mate
'look what you have done to my ute', the driver was laying on the
ground.
Both got away with only scratches and the driver had a bruised shoulder
and is also getting charged with reckless driving.

Ouch, they were lucky. Nothing good can ever come from drunk driving.

They really need to get rid of all these trees that get in the way.

@ 150 clicks when they lost it, I'd say those people living in the nearby houses were bloody lucky too

Amazing that not a double fatality (at least) at anywhere near this sort of speed .. but gee it seems like the cab has come to rest quite close to the tree impact (under 50ft) which would be massive decel even from 100km ..?

Anyone willing to guess if it'd been better or worse in a one tonner?

Drunk driving is always a bad idea. They are incredibly lucky. I don't think I ever want to hear the sound of a car literally breaking in two.

Maybe if the 1 tonner didn't brake it might have been the death of them snapping the car around instead it broke and took most of the force out of the impact away from them?. But bend instead of snapping might have bent them more around the tree and closed the deal.

I'm gonna say it would've been worse in a one-tonner. The tray would've come off much easier, so there's less energy disapation there. Plus, since the cab is only a bolt on to the chassis, it would've been ripped and thrown, which may have helped occupants, but it probably would roll around, and since it wouldn't be as strong, probably get crushed.
