TRD Aurion withdrawn from sale

TRD Aurion withdrawn from sale

Steve Colquhoun, The Age, 18/09/07
Quote:

Toyota has suspended sales of its recently released high performance TRD Aurion, pending an investigation of an engine failure last week.

Toyota's high performance TRD Aurion
It is the crucial first release from the new Toyota Racing Developments workshop, which has bolted a supercharger on to the Aurion's V6 engine to lift power from 204 kW to 241 kW.

''A handful of cars have already gone out to customers, who we believe have no reason to be concerned. If they would like to speak to their Toyota dealer we encourage that and the dealer will take the appropriate steps.''

Toyota spokesman Mike Breen says one vehicle ''had an issue'' in the hands of a dealer salesperson. ''The issue appears unrelated to the supercharger or the engine power output,'' he says. ''At the moment, we believe this is a one-off issue.

Toyota has a commitment to the quality of our product and since this type of incident is unusual for a Toyota engine, we took the decision to stop selling the vehicle while we investigate.''

About 150 cars in dealerships or being used for marketing purposes will be inspected. ''We expect it will take about two hours per car, and about one week to run through the process,'' Mr Breen says.
prolly a faulty sensor in the ABS or something, it just says "a fault" doesnt say...

Recalls are for safety issues - more likely involving the brakes, steering and the passive/active safety systems. Engine recalls arent really recalls.

When they first released the specs, i noticed they'd kept the 10.5:1 compression with the supercharger. I wonder if thats making an effect?

TRD Aurion Indefinitely Withdrawn From Sale

19 Sep, 2007

Quote:
Sources inside Toyota have this morning suggested that Toyota have indefinitely stopped the sale of the new TRD Aurion due to “issues” - presumably issues stemming from under the bonnet.

The issue appears to have stemmed from a single TRD Aurion which was involved in an accident recently in Melbourne, driven by a Toyota salesperson.

A CarAdvice reader contacted us last week with information about a TRD Aurion being involved in a single car accident in Melbourne that required paramedic and police response. At the time, we simply thought it was a one off incident, but it appears it may be at the heart of this matter.

CarAdvice is waiting for comment from Toyota to confirm the allegation. Although we didn’t have any issues with both TRD Aurion test vehicles we have driven, Toyota will presumably go to efforts to check dealer and marketing vehicles, along with customer vehicles if requested. In the mean time read our TRD Aurion Review.

Shouldnt have a major effect the boost IIRC is about 5 psi, they've pounded the TRD's round PI getting the final setup, if any engines issues were going to happen, it would of happened then. Only time will tell.

MonaroCountry seeing your the recall police , could you please keep us informed of other manufacturer recalls or can you only search Toyota, by the way Holden and Toyota have had about the same amount of recalls in the last 2 years

It would be negligent of a manufacturer to not issue a saftey recall if there was a concern, if they didnt and an accident happened the ramifications would be horrendous

Your Toyota paranoia is reaching new heights

This is what I think happened, salesman takes TRD Aurion out for some fun, mixes up his driving ambitions with his abilities, stacks car, blames fault to cover his arse

All manufacturers have hidden faults in the past. Do you really think a manufacturer will recall a model, which could be thousands of models in the hands of owners, when the fault could affect maybe 1-2 cars? These days its getting better, we're hearing more and more about recalls being called when less than 10 faults have been found. Regardless, its alot easier for them to treat it like theyre all individual cases and only keep the afflicted owners in contact.

According to Carpoint.com.au, Toyota spokesman Mike Breen said the SINGLE FAILURE involved a piston and a conrod separating. Doesn't say anything about a recall. Just says they are stopping sales for now.

You think the engine failure directly caused the driver to crash? And maybe not another scenario such as they paniced and lost concentration?

An update on Caradvice that MonaroCountry seems to have missed.

Quote:
Editor’s note and update - 1:30PM: Toyota has confirmed the accident involving the TRD Aurion was not related to the issues currently plaguing the model.

Mike Breen from Toyota Public Relations has confirmed that a “sales stop has been placed on the TRD Aurion.”

Mr Breen says that “This action has been taken as a result of an engine failure in a Toyota dealer vehicle. ”

The cause is currently under investigation and is not believed to be linked to the supercharging or power output of the TRD Aurion.

Though of course, its up to the reader whether to believe Toyota's Public Relations department.

Recalls and reliability concerns can plague any manufacturer. Seems Toyota needs to fix this up - I'm sure they will. Just as Holden took care of the issues that caused the VE to be recalled.

Mistakes happen. I don't see you covering the Chrysler recall on SUV's that was really recent. That affected far more SUVs than the TRD Aurion. The Aurion IIRC is only sold in or around Australia.
