It's hard to write down how to pronounce nasal vowels in French. I was taught to say "un bon vin blanc" with all four sounds different. So the "an" in Mans is like "blanc" and not "bon". Try pinching your nose and saying "mang" but with a slightly deeper "a" sound.

Lemon in French is citron, which is not to be confused with Citroën (cit-ro-en).

Citroens are lemons?

I find this thread utterly funny. I've never came across a car brand or model name that I'm unable to pronounce 'correctly' - or to make it simple, comprehensible by the intended audience i'm trying to convey my message across.

Certain cars had no 'correct' pronunciation, they're just 'made-ups' from marketers to sound cool, or politically and sociologically 'correct' (to avoid instances whereby it might meant stupid in one country, or phonetically resembles something that might bring the owner of the car some form of humiliation.)

I don't give a damn about spelling correctly car names like Prius, Auris for that matter. But given the likes of many European brands that either carries the founder's surname or ones that actually means something, I'll try to adhere to their native language's pronunciation.

Well i do agree using 'english' as the basis for phonetically pronouncing other language's names or brands is something very wrong, english is one of the most inconsistent and unsystematic language i've came across.

I've always wondered about the correct pronunciation of the Mitsubishi Pajero. Is the "j" pronounced English-style or Spanish-style? That is, is it Pa-jair-o or Pa-hair-o? Or is it pronounced another way entirely?

Maybach is pronounced as My-Bagh (with a english pronounced a like in "can't" and a gutteral sound at the end that does not exist in English...)

I'll explain.

Andre Citroen was a dutchman who moved to France. The dutch word citroen means lemon. While in France he changed his name to make it look more interesting by putting two dots on the "e" (have no idea how to reproduce that on my keyboard...). So what was basically a two syllabe word, was turned into three syllabes.
We have also a very famous Dutch painter named Karel Appel, yes, his name means "apple" in English...our Dutch surnames were invented during the occupation of the French at the Napoleontic period, when they wanted everybody to have proper surnames. Not everybody took this issue seriously and went to register a silly name......

OK, I see there's a common misconception regarding the pronounciation of "Maybach". Or actually two misconceptions. Henk already had it pretty much right in the previous post, but I want to put it in order.

1. "May" is not pronounced like the english word "may". Instead, it's the english word "my" ([maɪ] in IPA).

2. "bach" - the sound at the end ("ch") is neither "k" nor the sound like in german word "Ich". Rather, it's the same sound as in scottish "loch" - like "h" in english "hurt", but more guttural (produced at the back of your throat). In IPA it would be [bax].

- "u" is English "oo"
- "g" sounds like English "j"; it's double here, so should sound for twice as long
So in English it would be written "Sooperlejera" with long "j".
