Interesting to see that we made it to 250 mph in the early 20th century but it took the 21st century for us to make a street car that was able to get to that speed.

Well there's always the WM record, 251mph in 1988. And in the same year the road going Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette was theoretically capable of 255mph, altough I don't know if there's any truth in this.

Something is going to happen in Russia...

Red Rocket. Aiming to reach 500, 1000 and then 1300 km/h. The car will be actually a jet dragster.

Characteristics.

First stage:
Tentative weight: 1500kg.
Draft: 1500kgs.
Tentative speed: 500km/h.

Second stage:
Tentative weight: 4000kg.
Draft: 10000kgs.
Tentative speed: 1000km/h.

Third stage:
Tentative weight: 7000kg.
Draft: 25000kgs.
Tentative speed: 1300 km/h.

First attempt is planned for the end of 2008.
