1956 Continental Mark II, so tasteful and understated compared to other American cars from the era.

Agreed. I've always thought the Mk.II had some of the most perfectly proportioned lines of any car, ever. Quality was top-of-the-line, too. Calling it a full-sizer, though, is a tad bit of a stretch.

Even though its a two door, its about 20in longer and 1000lbs heavier than the STS.

S600 in my book. The S class is just a staple of the automotive world and Mercedes do it better than anyone.

Way Down South
Having owned several luxury sedans in recent years, including two Audi A8s (one S8 and an A8L, but not the W12) the A8L would again be my choice. I will say that after test driving the W12 a few years ago, it didn't offer much extra for the $$$.

It would be more accurate to compare it with cars from the same time period rather than modern cars as far as size is concerned.

The new Rollys Royce Ghost. Probably the most luxurious and comfortable car ever designed (judging by the pictures). Followed by the new 2009 Alpina B7 (not yet on ultimatecarpage). Sensational looking and extremely rapid huge car with 21 inch, 20 spoke wheels. Nice.

With an overall length of only 200.3" and a width of 74.9", I wouldn't call that a "huge" car. More like mid-sized.

Sadly the pre-'80s era is dead, Fleet.
The new yacht club has a healthy supply of 7ers.

The modern Bentleys and Rolls all look bloated and on steroids, how much do I pine for the elegance of the Silver Shadow
