i learned something interesting about the columbo v-12 the other day. did you know that it was only a 3.0 litre? thats crazy! those cylinders must have been tiny, thats like motorcycle cylinders.

Some iterations had a big 3.0L or more, earlier versions were as little as 2.0L while an F1 Columbo swept just 1500cc

Yup, though in American planes it was technically license-built by Packard.

Well I'd say making things smaller is more difficult, but with the downsizing trend maybe we'll see such engines again...

What downsizing trend?
The only downsizing trends I know are happening on GM's employment roster.

Ok, in Europe at least.

Actually if you compare the Saturn Astra and its predecessor, the Astra has 400cc smaller engine. But I guess that's not due to environmental concerns...
