BMW 1 Series revised
So, we have the 1 Series. It's a BMW, it's small, it's dissappointing.
Instead of resembling what small BMWs were always about (neat, solid, sporty), we received a blob from Bavaria resembling a frightened chipmunk with a really sore back (Brokeback Mountain?). The rear looks ok, but the sides and the front are definitely at the opposite side of OK. So I started thinking what it would take to get the basic recipy of the 1 to an acceptable level. I didn't want to change the whole car, but rather just see if it's at all possible to take the elements the car already has and try to make them work. My version still looks too X3-ish to my liking, but overall I think it's an improvement. Maybe not huge, but an improvement nonetheless. While I'm at it, a few words of advice to Bangle and his chronies: 1. Never, NEVER make the area above the headlights (in the headlight itself) of a BMW larger than the area below the headlights! The bonnet-line should cut into the headlights ever-so-slightly. BMW headlights are meant to stare at you, not retreat in fear... 2. What's with the broken-back lines on the Z4 and 1 Series? I'm talking about the lines along the lower-sides here. They don't make sense, especially not on the 1. Stop that! 3. Why on earth did you extend the A-Pillar on the Z4 with a line across the side??? You may find it nice to have a weird "Z" in convex and concave surfaces on a Z4, but isn't the badge enough? 4. Stop using large words and not having the product to back it up with. When I look at a 1, I don't see dynamic or revolutionary. Refer higher up to find out what I see. 5. The X3 is just wrong. Don't ask me what exactly. It just is. 6. The 5 looks not too bad from some angles, but from others it looks just bad. Your design fooled me for a while, but now that my eyes got used to it, it just doesn't work! Fix it! 7. The 6 is good. Your weird styling language somehow works here. Compare all future models to this car and if it's clearly not making the same impact, back to the drawing board! 8. The 7 Series, well. What can I say that hasn't been said already? Get your act together! I'll stop there. For now.

It's loads better, but it's still rubbish, isn't it? That's not even slightly a dig at your effort, cos it's a massive improvement, especially the headlights. I'm pretty sure there's a proverb somewhere about polishing a turd though.
10/10 for effort mind you. |
