Wolseley 4/44

Wolseley 4/44

When launched in 1952 The Wolseley 4/44 was one of first products of the newly formed British Motor Corporation (BMC), which brought together the Nuffield Group (Morris, Wolseley, Riley) and Austin.

The unitary body was designed by Gerald Palmer and in order to maintain the Wolseley image, leather and wood was generously applied. The 4/44 had a 1250 cc four cylinder engine producing 47 BHP, not an amount that turned the vehicle into a street racer. To meet the demand for more power a little more the 15/50 was introduced, using the same body but a 56 BHP, 1500 cc engine. In this form it was build from 1956 to 1958. Production totals are almost 30,000 for the 4/44 and 12,350 for the 15/50

Shown are two 4/44s, one at the Paleis het Loo Concours in 2004, and the other at the parking lot of the Silverstone track, during the 2005 historic festival.
