Fiat Abarth 1000 OT

Fiat Abarth 1000 OT

The Fiat 850 Coupe proved to be a fantastic success for the factory and it did not take long for Abarth to come up with something hotter for those who thought that 47 BHP of the standard model were not good enough.
In 1966 the 1000 OT was launched, with the same 1000 cc engine as in the Fiat 600 derived Abarth versions. In this shape the car had 70 BHP, allowing about 160 kph. (The standard version could make 145 on a good day, whereby the rev-counter went into the red. Also hotter versions OTS and OTR were available, but the OT was the only one really suitable for normal use.

Later on 1300, 1600 and the ferocious 2000 OT used the same bodywork, but were never offered for street use.

As is normally the case with Abarth no reliable production figures are known, but the car was produced during three years until 1969.

Shown are two examples, one at the Essen Technoclassica in 2004, and one in the Zandvoort paddock somewhere during the nineties and a poor quality one in Nuerburgring Paddock

Did they really have to plaster a plaque of the name of the car to the front?? I'd imagine the person buying the car would have a clue what they are buying but that's just me.

The Netherlands
Henk,

I believe I recognize the car in your thirs picture; it's a former Dutch 1000 OTR, with "R" standing for Radiale. The car was owned by Lex van Tienhoven. The car was later sold to the UK, where it was restored by Middle Barton Garage.

Seeing an 2000OT in action is really stunning. There was a genuine one in action on SpaItalia about a year ago.

The 1300 version was also used for street use. It was actually powered by an engine based on a 1200cc 124 engine. But the rotation was reversed using gears on the end of the cam!

This weekend I've been at Porto for the 1st Boavista race weekend including WTCC and all that, and making a report for UCP. I went on my regular 850 Coupé series one (same body as the OT's) and a spanish gentleman who seemed to be in a hurry stopped near me and said: "Last year I was at a show in France and there was this ultra-rare OT 2000 for sale! God the car is so beautiful! Congrats on your's! Bye!"
