Lada Vaz 2104

Lada Vaz 2104

Production of Lada Vaz 2104, also known as Lada Nova Break started at the end of 1984. It was replacing highly popular Vaz 2102. This model along with 2105 and 2107 represents second generation of Lada cars, rear wheel drive sedans and wagons based on Fiat 124.
Vaz 2104 is produced to this day and well-liked among country house owners as spacious and dependable work horse.
Original 1.3 liter engine is now discontinued, base model has index 21043 and equipped with 1.45 liter motor. Also available are 21045 diesel and 21044-40, 1.52 liter, direct ignition models.

My friend has one like this, even in similar color, but a bit more dark. Actually, there are lots of them in Russia, but that is the one I drove. You know, talking about 2104/05 and the 124 by Fiat, from which they were developed, Lada models have harder suspensions and they are easier to drive (even compared to a 2101/02/03 models, which though were not just a copy of a 124, they were adapted to make them useful on russian "roads"). And meanwhile, it is not so simple to kill them, as we used it hard in a village, and Lada's still alive! If you saw the roads we did hit on it... They are real workhorses. Moreover, it's almost the cheapest car in the world The new one starts at about 6500 USD in Moscow!
But what it really missed is an AWD.
P.S. Unfortunately, the price means the quality. VAZ will never be able to make a really good car.

they are about 3000 US$ if you collect them in Samara....I also saw such prices being quoted in Almaty, Kazakhstan...

Absolutely right! But they are no more produced in Samara, officially since 2003 all 2104s are being made in Izhevsk (Izh factory - they also produce Kia Spectra for russian market and some own models), except some diesel versions, which have been made by RosLada - the 21045. What about Kazakhstan, I'm not quite sure, but think they were produced there for some time, too.

If someone's interested, Izh is trying to modernize the car slightly. This is what they've got. The first one is a version of 2104 using 2107 grilles and some other parts (by the way, some owners made such modifications on their own, I saw these cars before Izh presented their version for about half-a-year ago). The second is named Izh 27157.

I took my drivers lessons in 1967 in a Fiat 124, so I still have a soft spot for the Lada...

Yes, but it was a 1967 model, not 2007. And, of course, of a much better quality.
Talking about Russia I just mean the quality of our cars and how long are they being produced... Classic Ladas (Zhiguli, i.e. 2101-2107) are being made from 1970 up to the moment. It's not Beetle or Defender to keep so long...
The 124 was a great car! I'd love to compare it to 2101 myself=)
