Ford Gran Torino Sport 1973

In 1968 Ford introduced the name Torino for the more up-market Fairlane versions, and gradually the first name took over the whole range. The Fairlane was the mid-range Ford and the Torino stayed in that position through its entire life. Interestingly at about the same time an Argentina made car was also introduced under the name Torino, but that had nothing to do with Ford.

As usual various many mainly cosmetic changes were applied over the years, and the especially the 1972 version sported a very conspicuous wide open square grille. The 1973 rectified that a little and gave the car a less aggressive appearance.

Engine choices ranged from the odd inline-six to various V8 options. Torino was the designation of for the base trim, while Gran Torino was used for the top trim levels.

Of the 1973 vintage almost half a million were sold. Shown here is one of the about 52,000 produced Gran Torino Sport Fastbacks, this one fitted with a 429 Cid Thunderbird V8. It was shown during the American Car Show, supporting the 2006 Concours d’Elegance at Palace Het Loo.
