Sultan of Brunei's Mercedes 600 Laudalet

I heard that some 600s were sent back to M-B in the 90's to be upgraded with V12 motors from the W140. Also note the unusual steering wheel (airbag?)

ps: spot the Sultan's magnificent Morrie 'junior laundalet' in the background

Not sure what good an Airbag will do though?

To protect the chauffeur?

Still, these old Mercedes always look cool and classy.

I 'borrowed' the pics from an Oz Benz club site

No doubt an impressive conversion. Oddly I might prefer it with the torquey original V8 (M100) over this higher hp V12 (M120)

Of somewhat on-topic interest is this W100 Grosser 600 in Sydney "fitted with the more sophisticated 6.9 ltr V8 Mercedes engine and enhanced with a sequential twin-turbo installation. Power output expected 600HP."

That's true, the original engine would suit the car better probably. The new engine is put in an old chassis. It might flex and not be able to handle the new power correctly.

In fact the max torque (twisting) output of both engines are very similar (405 ft/lb from the V8 vs 400~428 for the V12)

I see one of this magnificent car in early '70 in Bucharest, Romania. Nicolae Ceausescu and Iosip Broz Tito inside.
