Not sure which forum this bests fits but, why will some people block out the plates on their car(s)?

You mean like on pictures on the internet? Well I never really understood that. What exactly can you do with a liscense plate number? Look up info from the DMV about it? That doesn't make sense to me unless you're a cop or something like that why would they let you? And wouldn't you be more worried about a person who actually sees your car in the flesh and then writes down the number and does whatever people do with them. I've always wondered this myself very good question.

With plates I think you can get someone's address, phone number, name, etc. I might be wrong though.

You put fake plates on a stolen car, so if you put the plates of one blue Ford Escort on another blue Ford Escort and the police happened to run the plates through the computer (without stopping you/when the car is parked) it would come out as the Escort not registered as stolen. Helps with dodging speed cameras too.

Even so, it still seems pointless to me to block out liscense plates because you can run across any of those cars on the road anyway.

Not sure if the question states about plates in pictures or plates on the actual cars themselves.
In pictures it's almost like an invasion of privacy, because there's hundreds to thousands of people that can look at the plates, and with rare cars this could mean that a theif can identify where the person lives and make somewhat of a plan to steal the cars. Blocking the number plate is basically like putting up a fence, people can still admire the house but they don't have immediate access to it (not the best comparison, I know).
I was in a Ferrari showroom not long ago, and got given the go-ahead to take pictures of every car except a brand new F430 Convertible because it already had the plates on it, and the owner was a high profile person. I was not allowed to take any pictures of it to protect his privacy, if I did I would be able to somehow find out where they lived. For stars or very rich people the privacy of their location might also be in jeopardy if the plates get shown.

With plate on the actual cars themselves it's mainly to avoid speeding tickets/other small infringements.

My question was in reference to posted pics not on the actual car.
