the mercedes man is going through the dust on his knees for apologies

Apparently the enclosed space caused problems with the system.

No, the crash hall with the big metal concrete wall and the train system for the crash cars was the problem.

Outside the system worked (and works) perfect!

They made around 10000 trys outside, in tunnels and everywhere in the world and the system worked everytime.

That video was a fault of two sides: Mercedes, because they knowed about the problem but didn't tell the tv station about it. They even used a small piece of wood on the floor. Second side which made a big fault: the driver. He was working for AutoBild (big and well known car magazine in Europe) and also knowed about the problem, but he lied in front of the camera (he said the system works properly and that he had hit the brakes to late after the warning light and the warning sound). AutoBild fired him the day after this was shown in TV. Not a big lost for them in my eyes. I worked with him in summer and he was some kind of a**hole...

It might interest you guys to know that the whole test was a SHAM!!!

The crash wasn't a result of the system failure, it was a result of journalist talent failure!!

Mercedes knew that staging it in a metal tunnel would compromise the system so someone had the bright idea of rigging a test for the TV cameras to show how good the system was without actually activating the system!

The journalist in question was Michael Specht from Autobild and Stern TV in Germany and was subsequently fired from his job. Reportedly the Mercedes press employees who agreed to the test in the first place are probably gonna get fired too.

Silly Billies!

A failed test of Mercedes' new radar braking system that resulted in a three-car pile-up last week has been exposed as a sham for the benefit of television that went horribly wrong. Mercedes engineers knew the radar technology wouldn't work in the steel warehouse the demo was supposed to take place in but they were bullied into "simulating" the test by AutoBild journalist, Michael Specht, according to reports.

Specht conspired with the Mercedes engineers to brake manually, faking the effects of the system. Since drivers wouldn't be able to see the cars in front of them because of smoke used to mimic driving on a foggy night, a block of wood was used to mark the point where drivers should brake. This plan went awry because the suspension fitted to the Mercedes S-class cars meant the drivers (one of whom was Specht) failed to notice running over the wood, leading to a pile-up.

All this was filmed in front of the rolling cameras of Stern TV, whose staff thought the failure was genuine and reported it as such. But Specht was carrying audio recording equipment which revealed his subterfuge. Specht was fired from MotorBild while a number of Mercedes engineers also face possible disciplinary action, the UK's Channel 4 reports. Motoring websites have more news on the fiasco which leaves open the disturbing question of what would have happened if the faked tests has succeeded, a scenario that might have created false confidence in the safety technology
