New Lamborgini Prototype

It's not only Ferrari which has been giving designers the chance to pen their cars of the future - Lamborghini has been looking for new ideas, too.

In issue 884, Auto Express showed how the prancing horse company has devised an international stylist competition for young artists. And now, we have learned that the second most famous supercar manufacturer in Italy has also been tasking students with the job of reinventing some of its models.

This radical concept could point to the long-awaited replacement for the marque's legendary Espada - the four-seater front-engined GT which first made its debut in 1968.

The newcomer was styled by a Masters student from one of the most prestigious design schools in Milan, with guidance from Lamborghini's design chief Walter De'Silva. It is much more forward-looking than the retro designs already sourced from inside the company - which Auto Express revealed in issue 862.

Clearly influenced by the edgy Gallardo and Murciélago, the 2+2 concept has short front overhangs and a sharp rising profile. Nods to Lamborghini's cherished past include the high tail and bold rear haunches - features of the original Espada. But otherwise, it's a futuristic design.

The newcomer is tipped to wear the Lagartijo badge, and will be made from lightweight carbon fibre. Set to sit right at the top of the Lamborghini range, the Lagartijo will have its sights firmly on the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti and Aston Martin's Vanquish. It will take power from a 6.2-litre V12 engine delivering a massive 620bhp, carry a £180,000 price tag and arrive in showrooms in 2009.

it looks nice (but it's not really a 2+2 design)

you could say that..too wild, but then again it's only a conceptual drawing, they're usually exagerated.

This is from this months R&T. I think that it looks pretty good and it shows strong resemblence to the original Miura. Also if it has 700hp and weighs less than the Murcielago it will be fast in a straight line and the twisties.

The concept is a bit too radical for me but the one you just posted works fine for me although I get the feeling some people will think it's too bland.

That car reminds me of the 1970s Lamborghini Jota.

The new Muria pic aNOBLEman posted looks too much like the designers are tring to get the smooth slowing shapes of the Muria and the edgier shapes of the modern Lambos in the 1 car and these disprate elements don't work well together to my eye.
