Jesus Christ. That car looks absolutely wicked. Aggresive, beautiful and incredibly powerful. Easily going to be the best M5 yet.

I thin kI've worked out what it is about Bangle.

he obviously does all his design without thinking about where panel lines are.
So at the last minute something is bodged in.
That line on the front lip of the bonnet just weaves it's way across with no purpose and detracts from the front ( IMHO ).

They should have carried the grille on an extended bonnet and hidden that grotesque line.

We maybe need painterr to do a wuick job on it to see the difference

the hood looks more like a slab than an hood, it's big and flat and ugly.

your right they probably could have added a bulge or two on the hood (like on some of the AMG cars) to make it stand out/more aggressive.

Bangle has too little balance for this car, you look at the bottom of the car and you see all these vents and lights and then there is some kind of line for the hood and it separates the entire top-with no detail-, and the bottom with all the detail. it would look awsesm if they carried the lights up into the hood more, the car looks as if it's scowling or somthing, it looks off-balance and that makes it ugly. if this car were a person it would be that really huge, tall guy with a unibrow.

Well others have voiced the concern over the bonnet in different words, so maybe you see it already.

But, yes I've PS'ed it
A quicky.
The red line shows that weaving joint between bonet and body. It's lacks strengh or purpose.
It looks as if it has been forced to have that shape to suit the grille. That's just bad design and any first year designer would point that out.
I've suggested the blue line.
It would retain the strength of the curves from the lights and that are already there in the bulges.
Of course, it would be more expensive as the bonnet isn't a simple pressing etc et.
But, it's not as if it's a cheap car he's trying to design.

I used to assist our local university in their annual design awards and as part of the group judging I have to tell you that Bangle would have been getting told that he should find another career !!

in closing to parody a well known film .....

which do you choose the red line or the blue line ?

ahh yes you are right...i didnt notice that till now, seems bangle went away from traditional BMWs where the grill raised with the hood.
i agree it would look much better the traditional way.

no, but i haven't met Chris Bangle either.
Bangle also made the grille thing a different shape they went fron a shape like this {}{} to a shape i can't even make with my keyboard!
he also mad the grilles at more if an angle instead of having them strait up and down, like the good old BMWs.

Frankly the BMW grille is difficult to identify from the MG late Rover grille shape.
Shame, I prefer the very upgright BMW grille and wish he'd go back to that in the same way Alfa have returned to their deep grilles

I guess I am the only person on Earth to like this new M5? I personally think it looks great. I'm not so much a fan, however, of the new 7 series. BMW needs something new, becuase really, alot of their old cars are just a wee bit conservative, and this is simply trial and error. I expect the new 3 series to look absolutely fine.

UPDATE: Thank you Bum man! I do agree the bonnet does look like a big slab of concrete, but I expect that the production version will have a hump or something like that.
