Porsche readying seven-speed DSG for lineup

According to leftlanenews.com, Porsche is getting ready to roll out a new seven-speed twin-clutch Direct-Shift Gearbox for everything from the Boxster to the forthcoming GT1 supercar.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/07/...sg-for-lineup/

Could they be getting the technology from VW? After all, they own 25% of the company.

The DSG option will sell very well in my opinion, because:
-Fast upshifting without hiccups
-It was critically acclaimed in its VW Group utilisation
-It only weighs 20kg more compared to the manual equivalent (the VW unit)
-It has 7 speeds
-The Bugatti experience (1250 Nm of torque) will aid Porsche in making their unit reliable

Well I believe it was actually Porsche who were the first to develop and patent the use of a double-clutch system back in the mid-eighties. The PDK (Porsche Doppel-Klutch or something like that) was developed for use on the company's group C racers like the 956 and 962. Audi then borrowed the design for use in their Pikes Peak S1 Quattro, also in the mid-eighties. So really this is case of Porsche taking back the technology and ingenuity which was theirs in the first place.

I also think that Porsche have had a system like this in development for their roadcars for a couple of years, so before the merger deal with VAG ever took place. Obviously I'm sure the shared experience will help, but I reckon Porsche would've come out with this system themselves regardless of the deal with VAG.

It's not a merger. Porsche has bought 3% more shares of the VW group.

It was inevitable, especially after MotorTrend continued to hint the DSG in their 997 Carrera Turbo article

That's pretty cool. I personally like manuals, but if I'm stuck in traffic I'd love a DSG. Your foot would fall off if you were in any manual car.

You can't have driven a manual, they really aren't that bad.

I've pretty much always driven a manual, I have no issues with them in traffic.
