While BMW has one V10, Audi has a whole family of them. According to Axel Eiser, head of quattro's engine development, all Audi-designed petrol engines used to measure 88mm between each of their bore centres, which let Audi build anything from three- to five-pot cylinder heads on the same equipment. The Lamborghini Gallardo's 4961cc V10 is from this now redundant family.

The new Audi engine family has 90mm bore spacings, and the S6's 5204cc engine is the first 'big' engine from this family. This RS6 might have a 5.0-litre V10, but it's 4991cc, 278kg and owes nothing to any current Lambo V10. So the Gallardo has yesterday's engine, and Lamborghini knows it.

At the Geneva Show, a facelifted Gallardo will surface featuring a new 5.2-litre V10, 90mm bore spacings, a flat-plane crank and a direct-injection system based off Audi's FSI.

So the new engine is based off the engine in the S6. But if you can complain about a 5.2 litre V10 with a flat-plane crank and direct injection in a Lambo, I think you really need to take a look at yourself, because you're clearly a very boring person.
