With surging popularity for diesel vehicles Volkswagen of America has decided to build a limited run of 2009 TDI Diesel Rabbit to measure market response for diesel compact cars. A spokesperson for VWOA states “A diesel Rabbit is natural for Volkswagen to sell because this is a vehicle that the customer expects us to build, German engineered, fuel efficient, fun to drive and well within reach of the working consumers budget”

Powered by the 2.0L Clean Diesel TDI, delivering 140 horsepower and 235 ft.-lbs. of torque, the new diesel Rabbit does not conform to old compact car stereotypes.

The 2009 Diesel Rabbit will feature a few distinctive exterior cues to distinguish it from the rest of the bunny pack. The headlight assembly will be finished in a dark charcoal finish instead of chrome found on regular rabbits, a distinctive 6 spoke cast aluminum and smoked taillight treatment completes the look of the 2009 Diesel Rabbit.

Either way, good news. I mean I'd personally still get a nature-killing petrol driven four cylinder turbocharged variant, but for the rest of you plebes I support diesel.

I feel sorry for people who live in Europe / America, I live in Dubai and here it only costs 20£/40$ to fill up gas guzzler like an LR3 or a Cayenne Turbo. I was in England recently and a friend said that it costs +/- 50£ to fill up a toyota auris diesel.

In Venezuela (where I'm from) you can fill a Cayenne Turbo with less than US $5 ... But I don't think anybody in Venezuela feels sorry for those who live in North America or Europe.

Not. With price of diesel today over gas it'd take about ten years to recover the price difference of the TDI vs the gas model.

Until the fuel price trend reverses it's going to all but kill any diesel car momentum in the US.

Up here where I'm at, gas is at 3.01 for unleaded 87 and 4.03 for Diesel.

Diesel is only about 10 cents a litre more here than gasoline...
