Using the above method I calculated that the McLaren would need 633hp to do 386km/h, which is only 6 more that the engine's actual output, so pretty accurate, about 1%.

So I stand by my calculation that the F1 would, theoretically, match the Veyron's top speed of 403km/h with 731PS/721hp.

You've also got to remember that the F1 came out 10 years ago and was built by an F1 team. It was a proper niche car.

The Veyron is subject to stricter emissions testing, stricter crash testing and is being built by VW! It was bound to run into problems.

The way I see it, the McLaren is way more focussed sports car, light-weight not many extras. However, the Veyron is a very fast luxury car, packed with all the goodies you would find in the best cars. And for me, that makes it all the more special.

so is the maybach 62 the best car as it has the most extras/goodies?

i think what makes the best car is the the mix of handling, speed, steering feel etc.

The Maybach doesnt do 0-60 sub 3secs and top 250+ miles an hour, while still giving you all that comfort and luxury

The Veyron and the F1 are two totally different cars. No one seems to get it. The Veyron is still the fastest production car on earth, and yes, it weighs more because of uneeded luxury items. But who cares? Its still faster, the mclaren looks better and would more than likely kill the veyron on a twisty course but its no longer the fastest and the veyron will, according to everyone whos driven it, take the lead in the straightaways.

i wonder if you took the 57 model, strapped two more turbos on it and took out the back setas and all the gizmos from the back (needs to be a 2 seater for a fair comparison!) if it would crack 250.
its a pretty slippery shape and not that much heavier

then that it would be the ultimate car

not really, it just goes against the principle of being a sportscar. imagine the inertia it carries into corners becuase of all the weight...

but then does it really need all that power or speed? you don't need it on the highway. if they wanted the fastest production car they would've made it lighter, i guess.

it doesn't need all that power. they wanted it to have all that power. they wanted 400km/h. they wanted 1000bhp.
of course you don't need it on a highway. they just wanted to take the fastest production car crown. i don't think it was ever designed to be raced on a track.... hence the weight. they could make it as heavy as they needed it to be.

but it didn't need to be that heavy; its just wasteful. a reliable 1000hp is not that dificult, it certainly does not need 16 cylinders and 4 turbos. they could have made exactly the same car minus 200kg.
