yeah FFVII is timeless. there are a lot of games that i have trouble playing now cause the graphics are too crappy and i cant get "into it" but FFVII is so good it the old school horse-hoof graphics dont even matter.

How can you have an accurate role playing game?

If your going by that then GTA would be closest to GT...

1. Shenmue 1/2
2. Oblivion
3. Mass Effect
4. Knights of the Old Republic
5. Fable

I think Shenmue was technically an RPG. If not, move em all up one and stick Jade Empire at the bottom.

Just thought of something- would Super Mario Galaxy be a RPG?

It's really, really good.

If you take RPG to mean Role Playing Game, that sorta infers you play a role and interact. In FF games, you have very little influence on the course of the game unlike say the Elder Scrolls or something where you actually make significant decisions.

Are you trying to imply Final Fantasy games aren't RPGs?!

Im surprised nobody said Pokemon yet. When the original came out for gameboy that was groundbreaking.

But my all time fav rpg was probably Mario RPG Legend of the 7 stars...SNES FTW!

Final fantasy of course is at the top of my list as well

I'm saying it depends on your definition of RPGs.

Right, I'm gonna clear things up.

Long ago, before Nintendo introduced Donkey Kong to the arcades and released their Famicom/NES console, RPGs existed. On paper. Played with dices. Dungeons & Dragons. That's the first definition of RPG. Then the Japanese being über good with technology created their own version of the game for consoles, two of the best series being Square's Final Fantasy and Enix's Dragon Quest. Both are of the good old concept: read the story in 'bubbles', walk on a map, BANG! random battles, turned-based fighting, cast spells, physical attacks, win, return to the map, repeat. To me that's the 'classic' RPG, or if you prefer, the definition of a proper RPG. However, it kinda disappeared. I agree the Elder Scrolls series could be a good example of a modern RPG. Hell, even the ultra-conservative Japanese departed from the old formula with Final Fantasy XII, no more random and turn-based battles. The Zelda series could be considered as action RPGs.

Also, many people here mentioned Grand Theft Auto, it's not a RPG, it's an action game.

For the record I would like to mention I hate D&D.
