Zelda is not an RPG. It's action/adventure. GTA is the same.

EDIT: IGN: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I don't know it. If it's anything like Deus Ex, then it's a hybrid shooter/RPG.

Long ago, before Nintendo introduced Donkey Kong to the arcades and released their Famicom/NES console, RPGs existed. On paper. Played with dices. Dungeons & Dragons. That's the first definition of RPG. Then the Japanese being über good with technology created their own version of the game for consoles, two of the best series being Square's Final Fantasy and Enix's Dragon Quest. Both are of the good old concept: read the story in 'bubbles', walk on a map, BANG! random battles, turned-based fighting, cast spells, physical attacks, win, return to the map, repeat. To me that's the 'classic' RPG, or if you prefer, the definition of a proper RPG. However, it kinda disappeared. I agree the Elder Scrolls series could be a good example of a modern RPG. Hell, even the ultra-conservative Japanese departed from the old formula with Final Fantasy XII, no more random and turn-based battles. The Zelda series could be considered as action RPGs.

Also, many people here mentioned Grand Theft Auto, it's not a RPG, it's an action game.

For the record I would like to mention I hate D&D.

Final Fantasy would probably the oldest/most popular RPG out there then, if we stick to the classic view. I never really liked FF, but I always heard its good. Gotta try it out.

Well a series that sells 80 million units worldwide surely can't be bad...

1. TESC 4: Obivion
2. TESC 3: Morrowind
3. SW: Knights of the Old Republic
4. Drakkhen
5. Chrono Trigger (the SNES original)

I've never been much for Japanese style RPGs....they tend to define the character you're playing for you a little too much. I prefer Western style games, where creating your own persona and making gaming choices is more prevelant. That, to me, is real role playing. I make an exception for Chrono Trigger simply because it allowed for so many twists and turns in a great story. A timeless classic.

Knights of the Old Republic just had such a fantastic story line and offered a really great opportunity to be good or evil or somewhere in between. I never played the sequel, but the original was awesome. Drakkhen is a big time oldie that I was hopelessly hooked on for a long time. Good memories. And the latest Elder Scrolls games?.............pure greatness.

I would have some Zelda games up there....but I view that as action/adventure. Same goes for a few Castlevania titles....another franchise I deeply love.

Zelda is definately an RPG. i consider a game an rpg when your character gets progressively stronger and the game goes on. in zelda, as you complete quests you get hearts, learn new moves, get new weapons ect... so it is definately an rpg, perhaps an action rpg.

Bollocks.

I'm not saying that FF is bad or not an RPG, but when the player has zero influence over the story and little to no scope for personalising your characters you've got a very dumbed down RPG in the way that MarioKart is a dumbed down race game.

FF is more role observing than role playing IMO.
