What was so wrong with Galant, or simply keeping Magna for that matter. I actually saw one of the last Magnas the other night and liked it, just so happened to be black and lowered

All a marketing ploy to prevent BMW bringing out an 8 litre 3-series

actually now i think about it, it is mitsubishi, so it maybe an EVO FQ naming system, so its a 380hp magna, which would probably sell quite well, seeing as though magnas are AWD

Does that mean they'll replace the lancer with the 200 or something? What a boring name. Still, it'll be nice if the cars good, I don't wanna see Mistubishi die, we need them to bolster the WRC ranks and to keep Subaru honest in Group N around the world... not they really have been lately. Shame really.

Hey, if they get bought out by GM there's that possibility.

I too don't mind the look of current gen Magnas actually, and actually rather like them .. actually

And they're sensational value at the moment. Recently saw a Sydney dealer advertising upspec AWD Verada models for under $30k, driveaway! Ok, these were old '04s but how much are they asking for (moderately equivalent) Audi Quattro V6s these days .. more than double that? Oh well, I suppose perceived image IS everything thesedays

At an old Bathurst 12-hour (1996?) production race, I watched a humble 3 litre Magna lose only half a cars length, every lap, against a hard-driven one of those supposed 'ultimate driving machine' BMW 3-Series (6cyl, either 325 or 328). very illuminating & not a bad effort for a supposed shitfighter eh?

I've driven the AWD, good unit and would be a nifty family-car choice imo. The AWD Sprintex Supercharged version is a genuine sleeper, goes very well. As to the new 380, I reckon that's an ok name. At least it emphasises the competitively sized motor. Everyone would equate Galant to those decrepit old-model chuggers, and the existing Magna nameplate is alas also a liability

I saw a newspaper ad for it the other day, i don't think the styling will go down very well with Normal Australians, It's too youthful.

380?it's like a Full revolution and a Bit, Innit?

Thats quite an achievement i suppose, i wouldve thought understeer wouldve been the Magna's enemy through the fast sections on the mountain, and some of the corners like Forests Elbow and Hell Cnr where good power down is needed...

Perhaps it was handicapped by understeer (didn't seem at all evident at Reid, McPhillamy etc) but better in other parts of the lap? After noticing how equal they were, I watched BMWs vs Magnas closely throughout the race. It'd take the BMWs between 4~6 laps to finally cement their pass and get clear of both 3 litre Magnas, so bugger-all in it. That's what I love about production or near-production racing, it really can be illuminating and burst a few egos. I haven't got a 'thing' for Magnas, just think they're terribly underrated. Btw another surprise too was their melodious exhaust, they sound really sweet, one of the tastiest engine notes on the day

Good deal. Kind of shows how popular they are though.

The only way the Magna will be mentioned in the same breath as Commodore and Falcon is if it is rear wheel drive. Just ask the Avalon.
