what's your 3 favorite german auto makers? mine are:
1. Volkswagon
2.Porsche
3.Mercedes-Benz

it was initially going to be 5 but i couldn't think of 5 modern german car companys off-hand so i changed it to 3.

obviously you all seem to be preoccupied with so called premium brands so you are forgetting Opel and Ford. As I never owned or will own a German car, the thread's question itself for me is irrelevant.

Yep, in the same way as f.i. Holden is Australian. I know it is debatable, you could also call it European, but Germans might not like that. Fords are built in Belgium as well, just as Volvo's. If you take this a step further than Chrysler could also be considered as a German marque.
