Opel Tigra Twin-Top

New Tigra TwinTop: Sporty Cabrio-Coupé for all Seasons

• International jury crowned quick-change artist “Cabrio of the Year 2004”
• State-of-the-art roof technology enables sleek design and best-in-class storage space
• Two gasoline engines with 90 and 125 hp provide lively performance

Rüsselsheim. With the Tigra TwinTop, Opel is Germany's first volume automaker to present a sporty two-seater with an electro-hydraulic retractable steel roof. Depending on weather or mood, this dynamic-looking quick-change artist offers open air enjoyment or coupé driving pleasure. Thanks to its state-of-the-art, space-saving roof design, the Tigra offers over 500 liters of luggage space. This intelligent roof construction enables a sleek design line from the front to the well-proportioned rear end. The Tigra TwinTop was enthusiastically received by the public and car experts at its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, where an international jury crowned the newcomer “Cabrio of the Year 2004”.

The Opel Tigra TwinTop, manufactured in Cerizay (Western France) by the renowned coachbuilder Heuliez S.A., is available with a choice of two ECOTEC gasoline engines which ensure lively and economical performance: a 1.4-liter TWINPORT unit (66 kW/90 hp) and a 92 kW/125 hp 1.8-liter engine.

The Tigra TwinTop addresses customers who are looking for a sporty and emotionally appealing car. The new Tigra's well-balanced proportions make it a real eye-catcher, open or closed. The sophisticated kinematics of the Tigra's intelligent roof technology are essential for the car's sleek design, eliminating the drawbacks of conventional roof concepts. The continuing model initiative has these types of exciting niche models making up 20 percent of Opel's product portfolio in the future.

The Opel Tigra TwinTop's particular highlight is its state-of-the-art, electro-hydraulically powered roof mechanism that opens and closes at the touch of a button. In contrast to previous roof systems that required roof parts to be laid on top of each other, taking up a lot of space in the trunk and creating a “plump” rear end, the Tigra's engineers were able to develop a roof system with space-saving folding kinematics. This enabled the designers to create a harmonious and dynamic design line.

This state-of-the-art roof design is also the key to the Tigra's best-in-class storage space of more than 500 liters - 440 liters in the trunk and an additional 70 liters in a compartment right behind the seats. But even when the top is down, the two-seater still offers 250 liters of luggage capacity - plus the 70-liter space behind the seats, which is accessible from the passenger compartment. By maintaining the full height of the trunk, the Tigra always offers ample loading space. Particularly practical and convenient: just like the retractable roof, the trunk-lid opens and closes electro-hydraulically at the touch of a button.

The Opel Tigra TwinTop is a compact two-seater with harmonious proportions (length/width/height: 3.92/1.90/1.36 meters) and exciting design details: a matt chrome décor strip integrated in the trapezoidal radiator grille, the characteristic crease on the hood, the large air inlets in the bumper and the 3D-ellipsoid-headlights. The Tigra's silhouette captivates with its short overhangs, sloping windshield, bold shoulder-line rising up to the rear end, slightly tapered sides and muscular side sills. Opel's attention to detail is reflected in the air inlets hinted at in the front fenders, with integrated turn-signal lights, the wave-shaped bar made of hydro-formed aluminum, and the striking styling of the roof. The rear section of the roof can be specified in a contrasting color (standard with Cosmo and Sport). The rear end's large, wrap-around lights, the elegant matt chrome strip on the bumper and the visible tailpipe put the finishing touches on the TwinTop's dynamic design.

The Opel Tigra TwinTop's interior matches its sporty character with standard height-adjustable sport seats, chrome-ringed instruments as well as numerous matt chrome applications. In the Sport and Cosmo versions, two matt chrome colored rods provide extra flair to the Tigra's interior by optically connecting the center console with the transmission tunnel.

Driver and passenger benefit from superb ergonomics and extensive standard equipment.

In addition to the electro-hydraulic retractable steel roof, all Tigra TwinTop versions feature power windows, heated power mirrors and remote-controlled central locking. Front and side airbags, ESP, ABS, disk brakes all around and brake assist provide a high level of passive and active safety. The specially tuned Tigra chassis (wheelbase: 2.49 meters) works together with direct steering and a torsionally rigid body to offer agile handling and a refined ride . As of spring 2005 a special sport suspension will be available.

Numerous extras and a wide range of accessories, from air-conditioning and seat heating to 17-inch light-alloy wheels or a custom-made luggage set allow customers to equip their Opel Tigra TwinTop individually according to their taste. State-of-the-art infotainment systems, introduced in the new Astra, are also available in the new Tigra.

Two modern gasoline engines from the ECOTEC range ensure lively performance: the 1.4 TWINPORT ECOTEC produces 66 kW/90 hp and has especially low fuel consumption thanks to its innovative TWINPORT concept. Opel's intelligent fuel-saving technology achieves significant reduction of fuel consumption in daily operation through variable intake control and high rates of exhaust gas recirculation. The 92 kW/125 hp 1.8 ECOTEC engine provides additional power and performance. A five-speed manual transmission is standard. As an option for the 1.4-liter TWINPORT engine, the “Easytronic” automated manual transmission is available.

All data refer to the European base model with standard equipment. The consumption data according to 1999/100/EU takes into consideration the vehicle's curb weight as stipulated by this regulation. Additional equipment can lead to slightly higher fuel consumption and therefore CO2 exhaust emissions than the declared values. In addition, they can raise the vehicle's curb weight and in some cases also increase the gross vehicle weight, the maximum allowable axle loads and respectively reduce the permitted trailer load. Therefore the maximum speed may be decreased while acceleration time can be increased. The published performance figures are possible with the vehicle's curb weight including driver plus a 125 kilogram load allowance.

Read all about it in Auto Motor und Sport. It won in a head to head test vs. the Peugeot 206CC. Nice little car.

The Tigra shares the Corsa platform.
It previously was a coupe and now they're doing the folding top as it's the current "in thing"

not only is it the current in thing, but because the market is demanding a small coupe that could be enjoyable on sunny days as a cabrio, and several other companys have met the challange as well so its sort of a competition as well.

Chic Style: Opel Tigra TwinTop "Illusion" In Soft-Top Look

Retractable steel roof with Bordeaux red canvas cover offers classic cabrio flair

Rüsselsheim/Geneva. The new “Illusion” model variant is another iteration of the quick-changing Tigra TwinTop: the two-seater’s electro-hydraulic retractable steel roof is covered in a Bordeaux red canvas, which gives the car the soft-top look of a classic fabric-roofed cabrio – without foregoing the benefits of a hard top. The Tigra TwinTop “Illusion” will be one of the stars on the Opel stand at the 78th International Motor Show in Geneva.

This variant also comes with many standard features, such as leather trim, heated seats, air conditioning, MP3-compatible CD-Radio, on-board computer, two-layer metallic/pearlescent-effect lacquer, aluminum sport pedals, color-coordinated safety belts and footwell mats, as well as 17-inch light alloy wheels in bi-color design. The special “Endless Summer” edition is also available for customers who would prefer the extensive standard equipment, but without the canvas roof.

Customers can choose between a 1.4 (66 kW/90 hp) or 1.8-liter (92 kW/125 hp) gasoline engine. Both come with a five-speed manual transmission, while the 1.4 TWINPORT can also be ordered with an automated Easytronic five-speed manual gearbox. As with all Tigra TwinTops, the changeover from coupé to cabrio in the “Illusion” takes place at the touch of a button and requires just around 18 seconds.

Soft top look with hard top advantages - eg road noise.

At least it still comes down, unlike the mock soft-tops of the 70s
