All in all, if I were given the choice between a 2ghz PC and 2ghz mac, I'd take the mac every single time.

hmm, what OS and memory on PC? Most folks end up with NOT enough RAM and it running slow. Apple never have that issue as they spec them high on memory.
PCs save $30 and it ruins performance. Crazy!!

Also, the problem with being too open as the PC is it sometimes takes tweaks to get the last bit of performance.

A modern Dell not matching G1 ? Summat wrong
WHY are you running a computer full ofspyware adn irus when you can clear it for free or even pay Norton $50 ??
Sounds liek a mac-lover excuse

Listing software for the MAc wasn't the point, there are a million times MORE for the PC.
Sadly some of it is crap - jsut as I've found SOME bad stuff on macs, but there's a lot less

Like with video editing, I've 2 packages I use on the PC depending on what I want to achieve. Same with graphic editin packages and database/graphing. Being able to pick from hundreds the ones to match MY needs which will be differnet from yours is a big plus. Harking back to the Apple 1984 ad - it's MAC users who are more locked in than anyone on Windows

Re overclocking the main point was you get the option. And it can be a cracker !! Mate has a 1.8g mobile celeron running at 4g in a water cooled system. a $500 performance for $40. that's a winner Given that manufacturing tolerances lets many chips run at least 50% faster than production why NOT allow the users who want to to get that extra speed ?

Also, check REAL performance. The G5 was lsated at launch for Apple having "selected" benchmakrs to make it look faster.
Now, pretty much everyone does that, but it's worth remembering and use REAL WORLD benchmarks where possible.
Also watch you're not seeing the DUAL processor scores. Not fair to match with the "domestic" PCs as very fuew do them. They're reserved for the business machiens pretty much

Apple were forced to pull their TV ad saying the "G5 was fastest processor" when it wasn't. They had no option BUT to stop running the TV ad coz they coudlnt' magically make it faster. Bad Apple !!!
Comparing official Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) dual-processor throughput tests with the unofficial numbers on Apple’s Web site, the 3.06GHz Xeon bests the 2GHz Power Mac G5 by some margin.

Having said that, the G5 turns in impressive scores there too
But I dont' want something I cant' twaek adn upgrade as easily as going to the corner store !
If I was computer illiterate and ONLY wanted a tool for the job then for video I'd go MAC still The rest I'd go mac probably just on looks, not performance or features

Most security issues on computers are because the user is very ignorant of security precautions, enjoys clicking pop ups, and in general has no idea what he is doing. If you take care of your computer well, only thing you might need above that is a special anti-intrusion software. If someone really wants to get into your computer that bad, chances are a small few lines of code in your OS will help
(thank god I am taking comp sci in school, so cool)

Given that you pay for computers in money and not in Gigs, I'd take a $3000 Dual Opteron PC over a $3000 G5 If you check out http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...6_9014,00.html it's clear howe the G5 has now slipped well down the BIG-BANG order

Or a latest 1G FSB, Extreme P4 at 4G and have money left over for a drink in the pub.
OR play the AMD 64 bit game if it really matter for the work I was going to do ( not a lot of it around for the dekstop ) and take EVERYOEN to the pub with the change
Clock speeds mean nothing in the real world .

It depends on how crucial the bit of software is.

For me I would be at a severe disadvantage if I had a mac because it won't run a couple of programs that I need, seeing as the uni computers with the software on are only available for a limited time.

That's what I mean when I said more companies should build them.

Where PC companies are competing for your cash you get more choice and lower prices. Apple have the monopoly on the Mac market so there is nothing to drive the price down.

If it was that crucial, you could just buy Virtual PC, a pc emulator for macs. I think a reason why more companies don't build them is because apple just doesn't want that to happen. They tried mac "clones", computers running Mac OS, it pretty much failed horribly, the companies and apple didn't agree about things, which led to the end of the clones. I don't think they would want to go down the path again. They like to have control over thier products, how they are made, have strong customer support base, and the prices of the product. There are well built pc's and poor built pc's, both run windows, windows has no control over the quality of the product because they aren't a computer manufacturing company, just software, mac on the other hand does everything.

Well, I could have bought a mac.

But it would have cost twice as much, and I still wouldn't have been able to run some of the programs.

It isn't to do with being windows or not, it is actual hardware performance limitations.

Yea, I spent all my money, about a grand, on a eMac, I regret buying it, I wish I had kept saving for a G5. I have a bunch of old imacs that I could do something with but eh. Is there anyway I can tie all of them together so it acts as one computer?

I don't really know anything about Mac architecture.

You might be able to use the ram and hard disks, but I guess you'd still be stuck with the processor.

The class I am in is mostly networking and computer security/precaution.

A major project in the class, will have 2 groups, a "hacker" group and a "hackee" group. The "hacker" group will try theoretical ideas (not actually do them), and the "hackee" group has to find a theoretical way to stop them.

Right now we are doing networking mostly. Things like whats the difference between a FTP and TCP. It is very fun. It is also the same class that is doing the small programming peices, and why I want a C compiler. I am mostly looking for one that will get me through the class, but also one that i can use for a nice long time (my sister's boyfriend actually has a very nice programming compiler that he is going to give me when he finds the time to copy it. Its over eight hundred american dollars as it can compile and run just about any major language in the USA, with every single option ever put onto a compiler for each one!)

As a fellow Mac user / loyalist I have to agree. People seem to get turned off by the Macs high price and it can be a problem for most people...sure. But you can't expect top rate quality in a computer (or car) if you're not willing to pay for it I've never had a hardware problem and only one sofware problem in 4 years. How many PC users can say that?

Around 97% of the viruses, worms and spyware is written for Windows, not Mac. So while most of the world is worrying, Mac users are working/surfing happily.

Last and not least, design. Macs look cool and original. Mac for me

True, but for about £700 I got a PC that can only be equalled by a £1,300 G5.

I got a hefty monitor, new graphics card, printer/scanner, quality speakers, antivirus software, DVD writer and Microsoft office for just under £1,200

That put the G5 to £1,800, which was out of the question.

It is not to dissimilar to the Ferrari Enzo and the Ariel Atom.

They are the same speed, and one is of a slightly better quality and also comes with traction control (no crashes ) but costs significantly more.

I have to say PC because I have never tried a MAC. But I have been getting some viruses on my PC so I'm pretty disapointed with it right now.

You should add a poll to this thread.

PCs can be upgraded to match Mac peformance for less money like you say Coventry But you can still be affected by most viruses and worms. I'm sure you're smart enough to use an effective firewall and anti-virus but over half of computer users aren't.

The Enzo vs Ariel Atom is a good comparison, exept for the fact that both the Enzo and the Atom are high quality cars with an exeptional one of a kind design. Something PC makers can't claim, specially the no name clones
