Earthquakes in California

I'm a bit worried about quakes in California since I live in the Bay Area.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A strong undersea earthquake struck late Thursday off the shore of northern California.

The US Geological Survey said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.

The temblor, measuring 6.6 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, struck at 10:21 pm (0621 GMT, Friday) at a point 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath the ocean floor, 201 kilometers (125 miles) from Eureka, California, the survey said Friday.

It came nearly nine hours after a 4.9 magnitude temblor struck east of Los Angeles near the San Andreas fault, rattling southern California from Los Angeles to San Diego, also without causing damage or injuries.

The epicenter of late Thursday's quake was very close to another, 7.2 magnitude earthquake that shook California on Tuesday and triggered a brief tsunami warning all along the western coasts of the United States and Canada.

Also Tuesday, a massive 7.9 earthquake jolted northern Chile, killing 11 people, while a 6.8 struck off Alaska's Rat Island later the same day, prompting some experts to question whether there could be a link between the shifting of the earth along the west coast of the Americas.

I remembered how some experts said a long time ago that if an earthquake is gonna strike Bay Area, then it would probably be a 7.5+ quake..........And I think it's gonna happen soon. If you know about the quake in San Francisco a long time ago, you should know that the city was almost destroyed, including the Bay Bridge. Some experts predicted that the next quake that strikes Bay Area would be 7.5+..........And I think it's gonna happen soon. Just look at all those quakes that happened recently.

But just in case... the San Andreas fault is a strike-slip type of fault. 86% of the California coastline is rising, not sinking. Even if the entire Southern portion of the San Andreas fault (from Fort Tejon to the Salton Sea) ruptures in one earthquake, it would be impossible for it to cause California to fall into the ocean. It's just not that kind of fault.

However, in about 10 million years, because of plate movement, the land West of the San Andreas will be an island- a long sliver of land- with L.A. somewhere off the San Francisco coast. Then, in around 50 million years, L.A. will be South of Alaska, where it will be consumed in the subduction zone fault which lies south of the state.
