You should only need to get the DivX decoder from www.divx.com.
Then MovieMaker et al can convert it during the import.
the .avi file should have the cc code identifying the DivX format. SOME files aren't created correctly. Also watch out some so-called DivX files are actually XViD - different decoder

Hmm, where is the DivX decoder on the site, I went to software but it linked me to programs I could purchase for $50.00 and such. The movie file I have is just a typical .avi (I think it MAY be a DivX .avi) and I just want to get it to standard .avi or even .mpg.

you should also google for and d/l 4cc viewer and check the encoder. There's one at http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avifourcc.html
