What to look for when buying a used car

I am going to buy a used car, and i want to know what signs should i look for when i pop the hood, can some one good with cars make a list for me please?

A list isn't going to help you find all the things that might be possobel.

IF you are buying privately then you need to take a mechanic with you.....

Sorry, but a list won't guarantee it for you as each model and make has differetn things to look out for - beyond the OBVIOUS of oil leaks, water leaks, oil in water, water in oil, rust, corrosion, pipes rads

Ask for records of maintenance. Especially if you're looking at a B5 Audi like your other threads would indicate. The turbos on those motors are notorious for breaking, especially if the car's been chipped; and the early 1.8T motors can suffer oil sludge if a regular change schedule wasn't adhered to.

It's the things you can't see that you have to be weary of with used cars. Try to buy from a dealer that has a certified used program. If you are looking at a private party car, take it to a mechanic that specializes in the brand.

As Matra said, no list would help. However, look for the obvious signs like rust, panel damage, condition of tires, see wether the panels line up proply.
There are several things to look at. Probably best to take a mechanic.
