Well said that man. I love mine.

Will, if you want a Mac to upgrade, go for a cheap, used PowerMac G4. You can upgrade the bejesus out of it (I've seen them running some CRAZY specs, mental...) and it's more stylish (in my eyes, even if it is a lot bigger) than a Mac Mini.

Good luck, and listen to Lagonda very carefully.

I never, ever want to go back to Windows. If you plan to record music, get a Mac. I've been on websites, and so many people complain about their computers crashing and freezing in the Windows sections, whilst the Maccies quietly do their business (me )

IWAAR, you will always find 100 times more people complaining about Windows.

It's simple statistics

But in video and audio amateur production 99/100 nowadays it is because they downlaoded a "free" encoder/decoder/convertor rather than pay the $10 for a reliable supported one Mac's do't get the choice and so are better by remioving the temptation.

Probably will get a Powermac G4, the Mac Mini just isn't easily upgraded.

Good man, ignore the Windows. It takes a while to get used to it. I can give you names of all programs you may need- virtual office, FTP, calculator, etc. I even have a program to change your WMAs into MP3s.

As illustrated by the family's Windows computer today, for some unknown reason it decided to kick my sister off Messenger then refuse to connect to the Internet. After resetting the router and rebooting the comp several times it's back on BUT it can't have been the router itself because I was running my Airport Express wireless network for the macs from the ethernet side of the router and it didn't interrupt my connection at all. The only problem I had was when I reset the router I couldn't get the 'net to load on the iBook, but I figured out that it was because I'd reset the router at the wrong time for that computer (which was trying to connect to it at the time [d'oh!]) and after a reboot, it worked fine again (because the Airport base station then detected it was there), unlike the Windows machine, where it took several attempts to kick it into life.

The slight problem with the iBook was caused by me, the problem with Windows...as ever, is just a headf*ck.

What did you mean by "connect to the internet" ?
MSN have a long LONG record of losign authentication in their network at times and losing messenger connections.
So when you try to do anything with the MSN Passport it dumps you
That's an internal issue on the MSN server farms - which are HUGE

Older versions of WIndows weren't too smart about refreshing DHCPs.
So they added a "repair" option on the network properties so all the Un*x bods could do it the old way DHCP leases can be temperamental to timing adn might be worth making them short. The Mac was clearly doing a DHCP release when it all happened - it's possible the router reset you know
For the future, if you have any connection problems you should open the router - it's usually 192.168.1.1 and if THAT doesn't work try a network repair which will get a new DHCP lease. Hoepfully that'll get you up quicker in teh future.

Also watch out for cables, so many times LAN problems come back to the physical layer. All it takes is a loose connection or poor quality CAT5 cable to cause glitches - especially if you have 802.11 kickign around

By "connect to the Internet", I meant actually opening up a browser and seeing it load my home page. Any online actvity was out of the question when that happened earlier. It wasn't just an MSN problem, and yes, I am aware of the limitations of the MS Network .

I realised pretty quickly what had happened with the iBook seeing as it uses exactly the same settings as my Powerbook and mine was working fine. It was just the Windows computer that was being completely random as to whether it would behave itself.

As an engineer, I can attest it's not random - just looks that way
It'd be worth checking how long a lease the DHCP is handing out to each of the machines. ( THough I know from previous discussions that maintianing the PC is of little interest for you and appreciate that )

Oh, one thing, make sure ICS is turned off. So often I find it on when folks dont' need to !!! I hate ICS, a crap idea

Yes, I know...I realise it is a piece of computer equipment and therefore "random" isn't the best way to describe it but you have to admit these sort of things do seem "random" when compared to OS X.

Now, now...when I have time to spend hours sorting that machine out I will, and more likely than not you'll know about it (referring to the offer of help in the other thread) but for now I'll use something that works without that kind of attention.

Sorry, I was lazy
Internet Connection Sharing.
even with only one computer WIndows will enable this. It is a router built in to the OS. Wasn't very well thought out and is best done with a very cheap external router anyway ( which weren't cheap at all when MS borrowed the idea from Un*x )

You would usually decimate someone for saying something like that. It's border-fanboy

It's more like a Honda Civic Type-R V a Nissan Almera GTi. Not only is the reliability of the Civic good, but it's performance rocks when compared to the Almera. How else could you explain my Powerbook (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObje...OnN6JIb/4.?p=0) being MUCH faster than a HP Media Center PC with 1GB of ram and a 3.2GHz processor? (the test we used was running the same programs [iTunes, Limewire, PS] as well as copying an entire DVD to the HDD.)

I already use I-tunes sacredly now anyway.
