It's also a meaningful test because they're the kind of things we actually do, and the Mac came out of it far ahead of the PC. It's all very well taking stats and data from the machines to figure out which one's the better performer but they mean NOTHING when compared to using the machines for what you intend and seeing for yourself which is the better performer. It's like listening to a chav who obsesses over the 0-60 times of cars...since when do people drive on real roads TO repeatedly screech from 0 to 60? They don't.

I know it wasn't a very scientific test but that was the whole point. It was a real world comparison, like a road test. How can you make a decision as to which car is best without driving them?

Woah. Your powerbook is quick. How much of the hard drive is taken up though? (I notice that has had a significant effect on performance on my pc's i've owned)

AND DVD performance.
And memory speed, all things which can vary significantly between PC suppliers and have little to do with Windows
Your tests are predominately an I/O through hardware test. BUT if that is what you do most then it was the right test.
"standard" benchmarks are more indicative of overal performance of a machine.

It's a 100GB HDD (formatted capacity of 93.04GB) I've used 26.83Gb, leaving 66.2GB (all according to the computer)

The HP I was comparing it to was a week old and apart from the programs I mentioned, had about 7 gigs of it's HDD used (I think it was a 250GB drive).
It's worth mentioning that the HP wasn't a laptop but a tower PC.
