The car analogy might not seem right but there are luxury cars and everyday commuter cars. In that sense expensive watches are a luxury, no doubt. A Casio quartz will serve the purpose of telling time. It can be argued you don't need anything else, plus quartz watches are more accurate than expensive watches with mechanical movements. However, people do spend on things which they don't need.

I prefer watches with mechanicals, they're just more substantial, somehow more honest. You don't have to spend thousands on an expensive brand but if you can afford it, go for it. The watch movement is an engine, a machine that's been in development for hundreds of years. If you're into watches, it's a kick to wear something that has been advanced, from a movement that would have been the size of a room, to one that sits on your wrist.

Sad as it may be if someone buys a watch just to show off, well there are plenty of cars which are purchased for the same reason...

I concur on the look/quality.

I've a range of watches acquired over the years. Couldnt' even tell you the bottom of which trunk or drawer some of them are in now

My cheap SWATCH spends most time on my wrists because it looks good and is the msot comfortable being only 2mm thick AND it gets noticed more and folks want to know where they can get one like it MUCH more than my TAG or old Gucci every did Not bad for $960 LESS than the TAG

the Tag Heuer SLR (which u need an SLR first, and then it costs £7000)
the Tag Heuer Aquaracer which is closer to £1000, i think its a tad more pricey than that...

But that's over-engineered as WORLD time changes more often than that ( 1 second in 15 years ) and you SET the time manually which has 1/10 second variability in it

Agree on the sturdy/reliable and ALSO have to add one for the swatch is being MUCH slimmer and lighter I hit less things with it
BUT changing the battery a hassle ?
Not really, only sourcing the proper seal to keep it waterproof is the difficult bit

I would takea gold rolex. I have 3 fossil watches now, each running at about 125-150 a piece. American dollars that is. Not a ton, but they are good watches. Wish they had leather bands, that metal shit hurts being smacked about your wrists. lol I have a silver one, blue one, and a red one. The reds my favorite.

I have no watch, but in the dreamy future i'd like to own a Seiko Sportura black and i'd kill for a TagHeuer LeMans (the one Steve McQueen used in the movie, looks like the "Monaco" but the bracelet is rubber and textured like a tire)
