Deutsche Bank Building NYC

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/20/ny...=1&oref=slogin

Quote:
On Saturday afternoon, in a fire in the Deutsche Bank tower at ground zero, two men with more than 30 years’ experience between them became the 15th and 16th from the firehouse to die in the line of duty since 1994.

The fire spread out of control as hundreds of firefighters tried and failed to pump water up a malfunctioning standpipe, instead flooding the basement, the Fire Department said. As smoke floated again over Lower Manhattan, firefighters were left to haul hoses up the sides of the ghostly black building, which was damaged on Sept. 11, 2001, and was finally being demolished.
I was there when it happened this weekend, my hotel was only a few blocks away.... At first I thought it was no biggie, lots of FDNY Trucks and NYPD Cars all over the place, but it seemed like something controllable.. Next morning I read on the news that two firefighters had lost their lives. They were both from the same Sub-Station that lost 11 men on 9/11... Hate to see this happening, they placed their lives on the line to ensure public safety.

My condolences to their families & friends.

When I am called to duty, God,
Whenever flames may rage;
Give me strength to save some life,
Whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person
From the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
And to give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor
And protect his property.
And if, according to my fate,
I am to lose my life,
Please bless with your protecting
My children and my wife.

I have so much respect to city firefighters. RIP.

First off all my condoleances to the victim's families and friends.

I've had the chance to follow the Eindhoven Fire Dept. for 24 hours (they have 24hr shifts). I was allowed to go out on calls, excercises and everything else they do. When I was there during daytime, not a whole lot happened except for an accident and a small outdoor fire. But in the evening a lot of lightning and rain started comming, resulting in loads of calls. In the 24 hours we perhaps managed to sleep for 2 hours max. Next morning I was exhausted, and I didn't really do anything except watching them doing their job. Believe me, these people deserve so much respect. And I reckon working for the Eindhoven Fire Dept. is very heavy, imagine working for the FDNY...

Yes, tragedies like these stink. It was an empty building anyway, they should have let it burn out.

Yeah, it's only several million dollars, who cares?

But with that said, it's sad that 2 firefighters were lost.

from my very limited marine fire training, i found fire fighting very very physically and mentally exhausting. The restricted mobility and breathing ability aswell as lack of senses (visibilty - you feel round the walls in pairs) make it very daunting. For example every now and again we done air checks - so you read and say your oxygen level to your partner. This gets tricky and requires more concentration than you would think and is a test of your stabilty in exercises. Then there is the small matter of carrying large adults (or sand bags )out of fire...

So i was crap but I have sooo much respect for the real heros!

It's insured, they can repair the building. No structure is worth those men's lives.

It would be hideously unsafe to let a building as tall as that just "burn out".

Can you buy two lives for a couple million?

Not burn out, but I guess you could have just fought it from the outside.

Also, I heard on the news today that the standpipe system wasn't working and the FDNY was never notified about that.
