I have had the same kind of situation in my father's car. I needed all lanes too and was very lucky the road was empty at night. Mum screaming and my dad freaking out in the back It can happen, but speed is certainly a contributing factor. 4WD characteristics contributing too ?

edit: autobahn near Friedrichshaven ?

interestingly there is a warning on the portal over the road, about 10 seconds before he starts to slide. Any idea what was written there?.

"Works on the pavement 5kms ahead"

I don΄t have any doubts that there is a use of driving skills to safe him out of this dangerous situation. As I said before he is a good driver,is used to use the car on the limitn track,on twisty roads and in diferent cars layouts and power outputsand to add to all of that he used to race in karts when he was younger.

Did look and it didn't look like he did, nor put it back on before driving off.
But, apologies to him if he did.

Luck was crucial, but there is a lot of experience and skills in his driving.
For sure, but he ended up on full lock with no more input availabel ... that's when luck does come in to play

If you watch closely the slowmotion video, you can see that when in full lock(final counter-steer) he retrieves his right hand from the wheel in order to prepare the use of HB if there were no traction available from the front tyres.

But offcourse that he would had hit the guardrail in that scenario.

I love how he parks his car in the middle of the highway right after the oil spill. Safety first!

I Agree, but simultaneously I understand my friend,he was blank, shocked and nervous after this situation,so he was not calm enough to think clearly about where to stop the car safely. He was also afraid that something had gone wrong with the rear tyre.

For sure, the oil was unexpected and not that obvious and the first thought WOULD be of a catastrophic tyre/wheel/suspension failure, I'd pull it over for a check too ... be fair it wasn't quite the "middle" of the freeway .... and it's always worth standing up to empty out the seat of the trousers

Can't speak for any other car, but the RX-8 DSC certainly switches in when bald rear tyres were hitting puddles

Would it expect it to in the same way it copes with black ice -- unless it gets on all 4 wheels

ruddy nora! I'm doing a course in June at Goodwood to learn how to control skids, but I'd just wondering, whilst steering into the skids what else do you do? Brake or Power out?
