support for video on UCP forums

OK, i've shared lots of pics of track and rally events.
BUT, I've loads of video whcih although much lower resolution are good for the shots AND the sounds.

Do you think UCP forums should support videos as attachments as they currently do pictures ?

I've proposed that the files would be limited to the same file size as pictures. With DivX and Mpeg4 compression (WMV) you can get quite nice vids in less than half a meg. So this is NOT a carte-blanche proposal to ask UCP to host gigabytes of videos. Also I'm suggesting that WE carry the responsibility on copyright in the same way we do with the pics. ( though I know we seldom adhere to it )

ive got loads of vids i want to show you guys but carnt! so this would enable me and you to share experiences in the car........and also things i downloaded! i would want the size limit to be at least 5.00 mb (big but worth it)

EDIT:I think that 5mb is too large....maybe -1.00mb

Its an exelent idea .. but does UCP forum stay like now .. with attachmnets pictures because others forums stay very confuse without attachements pictures ...

i agree 100% with that coz i am going to the GOodwood festival of speed in june and hopefuly will be taking a video camera with me, so a bigger size might be better but i would deffinitely like to have atleast some sort of video upload possibilities.

I've got an idea... the video thing sounds great to me, but the issue of course is bandwidth. There are so many people who hotlink videos online that there would certainly be no gain in it for UCP.

So, here's my idea: Similarly to how members who haven't posted yet can't see pictures, do the same for video. However, make it so that only users who have made more than 100 posts can view them. This way, we can also control any people who might join (and post-whore) just so that they can see the videos!

AS I'd proposed we would keep the video size the same as pictures then the bandwidth issues doesn't come up.
Its exactly the same as clicking on a thumbanil.
With latest compressors you can get reasonable clips in sub 1/2Mb.

Also, not convinced how many videos we could be putting up anyway.
MUCH bigger copyright issue and potential for UCP getting warnings.
My suggestion was for video creators to post their own clips.

maybee if you make it so that when you gat, say 30 rep points then you can post and see the videos if that is possible. i have noticed that at the moment there are quite a few members getting to the high 20's and 30's, this would also control the 'post-whore' problem because they arent going to get rep for

"great shot dude", "hey man that pic rocks" etc etc.

. the only problem that i can think of with this is that it might be a bit hard to get it set up so that you cant view and post vids till 20-30 rep.

have to ask wouter and see what he says unless you know Peter

heres my suggestion......
100 posts 20 rep, for users to view video files.
this way members carnt just post crap every minute, so when thay get to 100 posts they can veiw the vids, they have to have at least 20 rep....so they have to post some good replys. etc.
( they have to work for 20 rep to get rewards! )

Not sure folks like egg-nog would like this.
The rep points for som emean nothing and we should let that be.
Then we've no adimosity in the forum.

There was a concerted call to the higher rep scores folks to help get more folks up on higher rep.
So we all became a wee bit more generous and thoughtful thatn we may have been in the past

Certainly helps, just not sure of the disadvantage of amking people gain rep so they can see things.
Especially as I keep pointing out we can get really good short clips of intrest in 1/2 Mb.

Asked it of both a few times now and with little progress - Pieter on business and Wouter on the Mini - so I felt I could at least get a feel for the interest to back up the proposal. At it's simplest, it *should* just be the same update as needed to add the .pdf files which we got done in a few days of asking.

From our previous discussion I know there are concerns over control of the media.
I am asking for the support to be able to post material that is MINE.
I've taken the videos and whilst some will be marked my copyright as I've allowed them to be used in other commercial cases, the marjority wouldn't be. They'd be released 'free' to UCP viewers.
Maybe we answer the control and copyright issue by only allowing folks to post who first ask permission and second prove or "sign over" rights on the clips. BUT that has huge issues with effort involved.

I'm trying to step along this idea in a true business like manner.
So first the vote, then we'll debate the ins and outs of rights etc.
The vote so far is pretty clear ( althoug still low voting for a forum this size )
Let me keep this under control please otherwise we risk it ending up in a mire of a million possibilities, propsals and solutions. THAT is guaranteed to prevent it moving ahead. Video ditribution is something the industry is wary of and creating the picture of possibliy streaming 1 hour long videos will have Wouter/Pieter and their ISP running for the hills and we'll get nothing.
