BMW Gina concept

Jalopnik: BMW Gina

Do yourself a favor and watch the complete video.

I'm not too sure what to think of it yet, but I strangely find it quite interesting. I actually found myself laughing in astonishment when I saw the headlights. And the bonnet. And the doors.

Anyway, some people think this is a precursor for the new Z4.

I've been thinking of such things for years ago, but not with these heavy mechanical parts, instead with intelligent materials which change their properties using electricity for example. They could work like muscles. Magneto-rheological dampers are similar. Maybe sooner or later every piece of machine will be able to do this, to make them optimized for the current circumstances and also safer. Maybe lighter as well.

I think we should go a step further than just wrapping metal with fabric, let's all drive pillows around.

do you think that a bodywork is actually useful for your safety?!
I find this idea simply astonishing, I'm not thinking about the technology, but the idea of a bodywork that could actually adapt itself to the conditions in which you are driving. it also surprise me that BMW came out with this, since ultimately they presented quite obvious cars and concept, nothing really new. if you are thinking about the X6, even the Hybrid Concept, it's very predictable, a sedan (I refuse to say it's a "4 doors coupe") version of a SUV, nothing out of ordinary. and the Hydrogen 7, even if it is abosulutely a good thing, is something they are working on since...1999 or 2000 maybe.

I'm not surprised that it happened, and I'm not surprised that it's BMW... the engineering around it is easy enough and the wow/shock factor is very marketable... but the idea of stretch PVC/spandex covering a body... it's so horribly 80s. In such a bad way.

I don't think the complexity is worth it.

It's not exactly as if the car is that good looking in the first place.

Give us good looking cars first and then worry about the shape shifting ones please.

And get rid of the X6. It's useless.

I like it, brilliant use of the concept, although the name sucks, Gina? common...
The only problem of this is the real world factor, knifes, any sharp edges and bye bye, full body replacment.
Not a first for the car world, i think it was Mitsu who used this type of shapeshifting in a spoiler of a concept car, it's nice to see a development of the concept into something so emotional.
