How far were you from the track? How did the 70-300 fare, are many of the photos cropped?

None of the shots are cropped at all most of these are original "as they were shot" photos minus the one of Kubica at the start but I just altered the levels slightly. The 70-300 seems to have held its own I wasn't sure how it would fare but most places you could get reasonably close to the track but most of these shots were from middle of the Grandstands or back of the Terraces so i could get shots without the guard fence in the way. You have to remember that if you use a body with a cropped sensor the 70-300 is equivalent to about 100-420 on a full body SLR

By the way anyway looking to get into the D-SLr market im going to have to suggest if your on a budget look for the Tamron 70-300 Di II Macro. It cost me £99 at half price, so far its crystal clear at macro photos and i see very little CA in sports shots, definately a good starter lens.
