if someone could tell me what's going on with those engines on the tarp and in the moke... because all i can tell is that it looks like they've taken the head off something else and stuck it on?

It looks like a twin-cam and cross-flow conversion.

There were custom cross-flow twincam heads made in England for a while.. I saw one in a mini down at my local mini garage once when I was in Perth. Apparently they're pretty damn effective at opening up the top end of the rev range for a worked 1275. I think that one had a weber of some description bolted to the front of it too.

Can't place what that head is off originally.
VERY common to see that for Minis now as the best/easiest way to get ooodles of power
Also compelte engine transplants are common with frames available to use.
You might find more at www.16vminiclub.com :: Index but no guarantees
