GOt it, I'll see if I can get it down to 2Mb.

One of the great car chases and equalled with the clever Ford Puma ad replacing the 'tang.

Great stuff.

My original was bigger than the source you cited.
and through the miracles of modern technology, here's the chase in less than 2Mb

Annoyed that I can't find the Ford Puma ad as I had a copy of it at one time It's a nice take-off ( pun intended )

If you want it better quality, frankly go buy the DVD, it's worth it for this 5 minutes alone.

Well ramming a Dodge Charger at those high speeds isn't very smart. What the Mustang driver should have done was what the police did in this video

hmm, I can see that the new 'game' in the US is seeing how many times you can get the police to spin the car and you keep it in control.

Tell me does anyoen know how many helicopters are in the air at any one time over the US just on the off chance of filming this stuff ? it's at times liek this I despair of ever getting fuel consupmtion down. Why waste gas on such rubbish to amuse a TV watcher somewhere ?

I personally don't like the US tagging system to spin cars out either as it's inherently unsafe.

In the UK they use a rolling road block and trained officers to slow and stop the cars.

The difference is nobody has a gun. So the US cops I guess don't want to get as close as it takes to do a rolling stop in case they get shot at through a window.

Usually just 1 from the police but most likely you'll see more...from the TV news stations.

can't be the police as it's a live video feed.
And I've seen some on our news where you can clearly see 3 or 4 other helos in the area. Terrible waste for no purpose but the amusement of the masses ( a VERY Communist act )

But in Communism, you don't get the private sector observing/documenting actions by the state.

What rubbish are you talking now Guibo ?
SO WHAT ??

Are you saying it's better than capitalism because they don't waste fuel and showcase crime ? Sounds a good idea. Congrats

Relax, don't have a hernia. It was just an observation that happens to be true.

Besides, has it ever occurred to you that copters are in the air for other reasons? Hmmm...

You're right. Communism is better. Immigration into Cuba and North Korea is at an all time high; they simply can't keep people out.

The exact number I don't know, that depends on the city. But every major city has news helicopters from the local channels. My guess would be at least 4 or 5. In cities like Miami, LA, NY, Chicago the cops have at the very least 2 in the air, with the newest high tech gadgets to track both vehicles and people day or night.

The tagging system you mention is called "the pit manouver" here. It's used as a last resort to stop a car, but officers are highly trained on how and when to use it. Cops are very well trained drivers here, it would take an experienced racing driver to out run or out maneuver those guys. Plus state police cars have modified engines 400+ hp, in Overland Park Kansas the LOCAL cops have hoped up Z06 Vettes. I've seen them in person.

Taz.

Not hernia-invoking but does astound me to waste so much fuel and money operating helicopters to show chases. Besides a comment on the American viewer it also seems wasteful for the oepratirs - helo's are VERY expenise to run per hour in the UK !!! That's your advertising $$ being wasted - hey maybe that explains why you get so many realitive to us

Well in the original question that was what I wondered.
They all seem to be with news channels, do they all really need to be there to report ?? What else are they possibly soing then ???

you do realise that everytime an American makes that stupid comparison it jsut convinces the world of how extreme and dumb some of you are !!
SOrry if that was a bit blunt, but it's mad .. there are a thousand variations of government to the left of US political systems and only one of them is communism. If you learned more of them it might enlighten to why the US lacks breadth in it's politcal system.

Thanks taz, an answer to the question and nto a knee jerk response.
Much appreciated.
Do you know if they only go into the air if they think there's a breakign story or are they up there in the off-chance ? I get the feeling it's the latter, but can't believe it and looking for info. Ta.

OK, I guess that the "pi" doesn't make as good tv so we don't get to see it. As a 'tame' maneouvre it wont' attract as many ghoul-watchers as a high-speed 'tag'
[QUOTE} but officers are highly trained on how and when to use it. Cops are very well trained drivers here, it would take an experienced racing driver to out run or out maneuver those guys.[/quote]
Are all cops trained to 'tag' or only traffic ?
In the UK, we've 3 different kinds of polic vehicles.
There's the beat-cop who is in a Ford Escort/Ford Mondeo and they try NOT to have them do chases. As soon as they can they get a traffic police car involved.
Traffic cars come in 2 flavours, the Range Rover and the BMW/Merc/Jag/etc.
The latter are fast cars from the manufacturer and sometimes are 'uprated'.
Mate used to cover Scottish Borders and Edinburgh in a Volvo T5
Finally we've the bike cops who pursue at a distance

Oh and both car and bikes operate unmarked cars/bieks for speed checks
Fortunately one of the guys I ride with is a bike cop so we know we're safe when we go off into the highlands best routes with him

Advertising $$ being wasted? It's pretty well known that people pay to watch such events. For better or worse, that's in people's nature. Don't tell me you shut off that video after watching it only halfway through. And don't presume that I don't think it's wasteful to send up a copter to tape a police pursuit. Who's spouting rubbish now?

How many copters do you see in the video? I see only one other. And it's not readily apparent as to whether that's a police helicopter or not.
You asked a question, but it appears you had already made up your mind that the copter was sent up for the sole purpose of taping the chase. Based on watching that video, nobody can make that assumption.

There may be a thousand variations, but you specifically mentioned only one: communism. No matter, my point still stands: in communist regimes, they generally don't take kindly to the private sector documenting actions taken by the State. Now, are you going to refute that or what?

Believe it or not, such videos are admissable as evidence in a criminal court.
"The District Attorney & cops are framing me!"
"Oh really? Roll the tape."...
On the flip side, such videos have been used in cases of police brutality:
