I had something like this in IIRC 2005 - Windows failed and deleted all the shots. I've made a copy of what I have now on a separate hard disk.
BTW, there's a little problem with pics on my PC now - I've reorganized them slightly and the computer now refuses to open the most folders.

Just wondering what a good aperture is for lateish evening photo's is, and perhaps a good recommendation for some lenses that would be suitable...

I'd stop down and use a tripod.....night photo is good to show those cool starry effect when the light passes through the gap between the aparature blade....

As to what lens, again pending on what you are shooting....

Am investing in a tripod soon, long over-due for one really but still fruitless in my pursuit of a job and as a result funds are a little on the short side. Mainly be shooting sunset scenes and the like if that helps.

The Photography Thread

I've noticed that there is a lot of general talk, and photography question threads that quickly get buried by the competition threads. Seeing as this is a photography sub-forum in general, I figured it should have a general photography thread. I know we had one going which I was going to resuscitate, but I couldn't seem to find it.

Now you may ask, "Sean, isn't there already a Photo Competition Discussion Thread?"

Well you'd be correct, but that is for discussion on competition rules and guidelines which I started when I took over to re-evaluate the rules. It's not overly relevant anymore.

If you are still wondering "well then what do I do here?" I will tell you. This thread is for all your photography questions, issues, sharing your new camera, posting a couple pictures you've taken or experimented with, and talking about your photo exploits. This way we can keep the competitions threads free of unnecessary clutter. Thanks, and hopefully this is useful to everyone, as I know we have lots of great photo experts and people who want to learn on here.

Whoaa, slow down there Skippy! If you'd read the Officially Posted Q&A in the original post you'll see that your concerns have already been addressed!

Yes but Sean, isn't there already a long-standing pure photography discussion thread as well as a photography comp discussion thread?

Oh excellent, you found it! I was just going to sticky that one but I couldn't seem to find it. I knew it was there, at least I'm not crazy. Perhaps I should get rid of this and use it instead.

okay so I did just this, and stuck the thread. Use it for all your photography discussion means.

Yay!

I was just about to PM you about it.

Here's a question- how do you guys work in temperature changes?

This is because I was taking pictures in a botanical garden on a cold day and then I moved into a greenhouse, where it's suddenly hot and humid without noticing it.

I put the lens cap on it and I tried to move slowly into the building so the camera can get "accustomed" to the temperature.

Any tricks in general?

And do you guys ever take pictures during bad weather conditions? What do you guys do then? Take a plastic bag and wrap it around the camera? Or do you guys use a underwater case for the camera?

I have a weather-sealed body, but I still don't take it out in bad-weather as my lenses aren't sealed. Be very careful with with them.

I highly doubt my Nikon D40 is weather sealed. I was extremely worried that day in the Botanical Garden, because we passed between multiple greenhouses, one in tropical, another jungle, and desert. Scary stuff. Came out alright in the end, but it makes me never want to bring a camera to a botanical garden ever.

No, the D40 isn't sealed. I wouldn't be too concerned about taking a camera through somewhere like that, but if you are, get a reasonably air-tight box and a bunch of silica packets, stick the camera in with the packets, seal it up, and put it somewhere warm and dry.
