Don't be scared about the camera being in New York. A lot of the talk of crime in NYC is urban legend. I wouldn't necessarily recommend going to the Brooklyn Docks at 2 a.m. (although that would merit some great shots), but don't be hesitant about taking some city photos.

I wouldn't recomend going to Harlem or Bensonhurst either at those times.

But yeah, you're mostly safe on Manhattan.

Harlem is in Manhattan, but.. yeah.

We're better off telling him where he's safe than pointing out places not to go. Walking around my parts in New Brunswick, NJ in the middle of the night during the week/weekends is probably worse than anything you'll see visiting NYC.

Thank you for your advices. Now that I know the real situation, I'm more confident.

Look forward to seeing the pictures when you get back. Hopefully you'll enjoy New York City as much as I and many others do. If you need any recommendations regarding what to see, where to eat, and what to do.. pm me or ask around. A few of us here are in the NYC area or live in the city itself.

I saw pictures of this amazing place in Queens, Forest Hills. Visit there, it looks amazing. Like a European fairytale village. Primarily the Forest Hills gardens and Station Square.

Yeah, I can imagine. New York definitely is one of the safest cities in the USA.

Newark at 3 in the morning must be a nightmare!

No problem!

Might I add that you might want the 18-200 VR instead of the base lens? It has a plastic mount (the base lens) and I don't think you want the heavy(ish) D90 to snap off when holding it.

You'd be surprised at how quickly a couple of city blocks can change a neighborhood you thought was picturesque, safe and beautiful.

I want!! My girlfriend's father has a D200 with that lens, and is awesome, it fits in almost any situation. It has a better VR too. The problem is money, I have to see the difference and if that kit is available. I don't want to spend all the money only in the camera, I'm planning to buy some clothes and other gifts, and seen how the euro is losing value... , I have to take acount of every $. But you're rigth, t would be a excellent choice

Don't worry, I'm sure you can buy the D90's body only. Then you can get the 18-200 lens separately.

Yup, I looked at the specs, and it makes my D40 look like absolute garbage. Maybe I'll wait a couple years for the D90 to get old, and buy it then. I might get the 18-200 later on, but that's in the far future. You're right, either way you cut it, it is a hell of a lot of money. I should stick with the D40 for now.

Compared to my 5 year old Nikon point and shoot, it's light years ahead. Only issue is dust, I got a gigantic spec on the corner, and it's annoying the heck out of me.

Right now I have the 18-135. Decent lens, needs VR though.

I am envious of your future camera though. I look forward to pictures!

I think that the D40 is a excellent value for money. If I could, I would do what you're planning, wait untill the price drops to a reasonably low range. I don't like to pay so much money because it's the last and shining model, I don't mind if one model is older. The companies want to make profit of the new launch, just like with PS3, Xbox... The thing is that traveling to US is expensive, and something that I can't do every year

If you don't mind if the model is older get a D80 body and 18-200 VR for the same price as the D90 with 18-105 VR. Of course if the new upgrades over the D80 are important to you then of course get the D90. Or you can get the D80 body, 18-70 3.5-4.5 and 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR for slightly more than the D90 with 18-105 VR kit, if you want to have a 2 lens set up. That will give you sharp pictures (many complain the 18-200 is soft), no lens creep which the 18-200 also has, and an extra 100mm which the 18-200 doesn't have.
Just some suggestions, but it is YOUR money

Yeah, I have lots of time to improve on my photography then if I wish for the D90 to drop to a decently affordable price.

Like Ferrari330 said, I'm sure lots of stores (J and R and B and H) want to push their D80s away. You might come away with a good deal. J and R has price matching by the way, if you find a cheaper reputable product (like B and H) and show proof of it, they will match your price(!). Plus, some stores have special kits that only they offer that Nikon does not. Happy shopping!
