German Mechanicals and Italian styling
BMW M1, anyone? That didn't work in the past. Buyers of italian cars want italian engines. Look at the Alfa Spider V6: the engine was simply not accepted by the public, mainly because it was GM sourced. But to be honest, Alfa is a very hard case when it comes to engines.

Whoever has Alfa simply won't be able to make a business case for it.
Three costumers isn't enough to run a business.
Even if the cars looked like dreams, went like stink, were more reliable than a japanese applicance and cost 3p, no one would buy them anyway.

What you're basically saying: Alfa is screwed?
It may be true, but i refuse to accept that :(

Isn't this rumor already dismantled?

Alfa is screwed since... well forever... on that aspect.
However, don't worry, Italy doesn't follow the conventional rules. So all their completely and beautifully preposterous works are safe.

I'm told Alfa Romeo's break down a lot and are expensive to maintain.
Would this not be unbenefitial to VW's reputation?

That and Alfa's emotionality. VW isn't used to emotional cars; that would totally ruin their cold-and-technical reputation which would lead to less sales. They would have to Audi-ize Alfa to avoid that, and i doubt that VW needs another Audi.

Ahh I see. Unless they could somehow take the best of both.
Let's hope they bring out some sort of super cool looking Alfa thats cheap.
Lol what am I saying it's not like they have joined.

Even if Alfa Romeos were Toyota-like reliable nobody would want them.
Even today when they are just fine they still have that reputation for unrealiability.
In short, Alfa Romeo just can't be analysed objectively, because objectively it makes no sense at all.

Customers are often illogical and ill informed.
-
Appealing to the illogical side of the brain doesn't generally work when purchasing something as expensive as a car.
Thus Alfa's trouble.
-
Maybe VW should tack a "Premium" sticker on all Alfas and sell them for 2 times the price. Worked well for Audi and VW.

And yet, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Pagani,...

That's not irrational, they offer an experience you can't get anywhere else.

So does an Alfa.. Joy (yay, driving muh alfa!), anticipation (please start...), anger (damn you crap thing!), reconciliation (aww, I can't stay mad at you), bonding (just gotta tinker with this until it starts).. and then the cycle repeats.
