That was at the 2005 Brian Redman Int'l Challenge, Road America.
A brief discussion of what happened :
what happened was a certian second row camaro driver played too much Forza online leading up to the race & used a typical online racing game technique known as "my car is a battering ram - & i also have zero patience"
wa man that is bad ... so many classics :(
That is exactly what I was thinking. Especially that blue Camaro and the red Corvette in the foreground.
upped yesterday at the NZ Herald newspaper website
guy driving along a bridge - then :

Doune hillclimb, had been drying and then started to rain again.
Caught 4 other drivers out nearly as badly as this one :(
QOTD from owner/driver ... "I'd been thinking of removing the full race cage for a lighter one to improve times" .... phew :)
WHen a Westfield hits a tree at 50mph .... :(
Driver is OK, some stitches to back of his head where he caught the race cross brace on the roll bar.
Kit car and Westfield owners out for a drive on a typical Scottish weekend last week and in the wet they hit a large patch of diesel and he went sideways in to a tree with no chance of slowing down with ZERO grip :(
Tree hit right mid centre on the passengers side the guys were saying.

Youch! Glad to hear he's ok, that's one lucky fella. Any further back and he'd've likely been very seriously injured, or worse.
With a soft top for sure, but the sides of a Westfield are pretty strong construction, hard to say.
EVeryoen, including Matt, agrees he was VERY LUCKY.
I think it was an optimum palce to hit in that by breaking the back of the car it dissipated lots of the energy in to the engine/box momentum and away from him.
EDIT: Just noticed his sign off in the kit car forum ....
ps - Apart from that (and 'the pump') it was a brilliant weekend and I'd love to do it again next year :)
Yikes. He is VERY lucky... even padded rollbars in a streetcar in contact with yer melon can be lethal.
Never ceases to amaze me how many people have them... if you have a rollhoop, you should be wearing a helmet.
He had high back seats and so think felt he was safe enough but clearly his head moved aroudn a lot and caught it :(
How long has he had the car and does he really need shifter lights? As far as the crash, are those kit cars HANS compatible? because his head moved around wayyy too much
How would you wear a HANS without a helmet?
EDIT: My bad Cfan, thought you meant the blue Westfield. Looking at the hillclimb flip again, he should be wearing one.
Anybody that gets in a cockpit should regardless of level of competition.
a car can snap a power pole , yet wrap around a tree
they are one of the worst things to hit , they are (literally lol) rooted to the ground & you need overwhelmingly massive speed & force to snap a decent sized tree off

I presume CF was talking about the red crash, but this makes me think of people with HANS devices attached to their ears..
