47,1 mpg or 4,99l/100 klicks on the way to parents' house today. Trip from there to work netted an even 44mpg or 5,35l/100 km. Beautiful warm day today with a partial grille block and low traffic. La vita dolce!
Tank average is at 39,1mpg or 6,01l/100km.

You see that's better than the silly diesel car I was driving earlier...
-
Yeah, but the days when I drop the little one off at my parents' house are the good days. Otherwise I usually don't break 40mpg, as you can see from my tank average. If it had a 5-speed manual on the other hand...
-
Indeed, but the diesel engine all the 7-speed dual clutch trickery and modern technology only serve to gain 3mpg.
I think that light and simple can be sometimes better. Even my MX-5 isn't actually that far off the Merc in the same conditions...
The XL1 on the other hand... that can be properly interesting!

True. Only 2000lbs (that's, what, 900kg?) and the 1NZFE engine was quite well-made for fuel economy. Pure highway stints limited to 60mph/100km/h can maintain 44-46mpg, or just above the 5l/100km mark. It's not a big engine, but the car is light enough that the motor, with its VVT-i, is reasonably spunky, too. I should just write a review on the damn thing.

You should. :)
On the other hand the little Merc is almost 1500kg (3300lb) and unless you stick to 80-100km/h (55-60mph) it's impossible to go below 5l/100km (47mpg US) and that's according to the cimputer so it may actually be above those said figures...
We'll see once it's been propelry broken in but I doubt the fuel consumption will be much lower.
-
Yeah, today's cars need a pretty hellacious break-in period since the manufacturing tolerances are so tight. I bet you will see it improve. Air up the tyres to the max listed on the sidewall of the tyre for a small boost. Not sure what complications the turbo would throw in there, but I would see if you can run the next thinnest weight of oil in there too. And of course, drive lightly...make one run per tank to blow out any carbon, otherwise keep the throttle light and the shifts short. And, lastly, kick it in neutral and try to coast to stops and down hills.
-
I actually don't find it that impressive. I wouldn't say it is disappointing since I wasn't expecting much, but it's not exactly a frugal diesel, this.
Of those 828km, at least 700-750 (between 430 and 465 miles) of them were spent on dual carriageways and main A-roads with speeds between 90 and 130km/h (55-80 mph) trying to be as constant and as smooth as possible.
The rest were split between city and some corners.
It probably should've done better, however it has to be considered that the car is practically brand new.
Considering that you're getting about double what I usually get on a good day, that's quite good.

38,9mpg average on the Ultragauge. Have about 420 mi on the tank, just hitting the E mark. Don't have the cash in the bank for a full refill, might be another week or so before I report final numbers.
-
23.4 MPG on my last tank....about what you expect for the car for just city driving and on winter gas....

Bout what my Dad averaged in his Passat, if not a little bit better. And if I was neither driving like grandma nor a maniac, about what I'd get in the SVT Focus as well. That little car was a pig unless it was engaged in pure highway driving.
-
Yep, about the same as GTI. On long road trip on highway it averages just about 30mpg if I kept it below 75mph.
The EPA rating for the car is pretty much bang on for my driving habit. Low 20s for city, touchign 30 for highway. Averages about 24-27 depends on how much of a mix it is. Trackday it does about 9....:D

Sounds about right...

Ended up at 38,98mpg (6,03l/100km) for the last tank. Ultragauge was spot on in predicting 39mpg for the tank. Unfortunately the UG is not the easiest device to use and I lost my calibration while fiddling with it :(
-
Well if UltraGauge is properly calibrated again, I'm on track for 38,8mpg (6,06l/100km). Will let y'all know tomorrow, as it's due for a fillup then.
