Definitely the Nova for me. I must have cars that can burn rubber without even trying!
Car and Driver magazine (Aug., 1968) tested a '68 396 Nova SS and got some good times:
'68 Chevy Nova
Engine.................... 396-4 bbl
Compression ratio..... 11.0:1
Carburetion............. Holley 4-bbl
Horsepower............. 375 @ 5600 rpm
Torque................... 415 @ 3600 rpm
Curb weight............ 3,470 lbs
Tires...................... E-70x14
Wheelbase.............. 111"
Overall length.......... 189.4"
Transmission........... 4-speed manual
Rear axle ratio......... 3.55:1
0-30 mph................ 2.2 secs
0-40 mph................ 3.2
0-50 mph................ 4.3
0-60 mph................ 5.9
0-70 mph................ 7.5
0-80 mph................ 9.7
0-90 mph................ 11.7
0-100 mph............... 14.3
1/4 mile................... 14.5 secs @ 101.1 mph
Top speed................ 121 mph @ 6400 rpm
Fuel mileage.............. 9-11 mpg.
Price as tested.......... $3,687.95

No doubt that 1/4 mile time would be in the high-13s with wider tires- those E-70x14s were skinny.

jimmynova: The Nova is awesome. Stop being a fanboy, you're giving it a bad rep.

375 hp ?? 415 Nm or ftlb ?

seems like it cant really rev which demands longer ratios giving up wheel tq
its pretty heavy too which is never a good thing

Not so heavy for an old muscle car, current Mustangs weight more than that.

375 horsepower and 415 ft/lbs torque.
The redline is 6400, so it does seem it can rev pretty well.
The weight isn't too bad considering it has a heavy big-block engine.

Acceptable might be a better word. My mums Camry hasnt even hit redline at 6400rpm yet, so theres definately going to be some purists who still think its a relatively lazy engine .

6400 is certainly not considered to be a "lazy revving" engine.
For example, the redline on a 2-bbl, small-block V-8 Mopar from the '60s (like 273 or 318) is only 5200 rpm.
The redline on my '69 Cadillac 472 is also 5200 rpm. Of course that engine relies on low-end torque and doesn't need high revs.
Many '60s muscle car engines had redlines around 5500-6000 rpm.

A lot of modern cars weight more than the old Novas, and even some of the bigger muscle cars. Side impact airbags, door beams, emissions equipment, power windows/doors, 7 speaker stereos... They all add weight.

And air conditioning. A large amount of '60s/early '70s muscle cars were not equipped with that, and with some muscle cars (like the ones with the 426-Hemi and 440-6 Pack) you could not order a/c.

its important to know when the engine redlines and its max torque peak and its torque curve since that determines the gear ratios and ultimately torque at the wheels

im assuming ther rear axle ratio is the final drive ratio, 3.55 is really really long
but id need the individual gear ratios and a dyno sheet to plot an acceleration or velocity time graph

the reason why some cars with comprable sized and powered engines can drive so differently and sometimes cars with the SAME engine is because of the gear ratios, torque and horsepower at the crank wont matter if the gears arnt spaced correctly
