Fiat is new main-sponsor for Yamaha!

It is now confirmed that Fiat will join the Yamaha MotoGP team, as a main-sponsor for the next two years.

Here the brand new livery shown with the new 800 ccm Yamaha YZR-M1

Rossi

IMO, the new bike has a much better physical appearance than the prevoius Yamaha bike which was riden by Rossi.

It is strange a famous European company like Fiat is sponsoring a famous Asian company... Yamaha.

The big issue is marketing.
Rossi is a big star in Italy, and Fiat is also an Italian company with failing sales results the last years.
To be represented by Rossi is of course a big issue on their home ground, and of course in the rest of Europe.

And yes. I like the new bikes appearance a lot to

The new 800s are automotive porn, especially the Honda RCV.

Has there been any sponsorship of of bike racing teams by car makers in the past?

Fiat makes sense ....

Rossi is in his last one or two years of bike racing.

After that he will (likely) compete in rallying in guess what .... a Fiat Punto 2000 WRC

The Fiat sponsorship is all down to his relations with Fiat-Ferrari after driving the F1 car a while back.
If Rossi went into rally he'd be driving for Citroen almost without doubt but would need to sharpen up his skills as anyone who watched the footage of him rallying in the Scooby will know.

P.S - ROSSIPWNSYOOALLLLLLL MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Plus. If you didn't already know, Nicky Hayden of Repsol Honda has changed his race number to #1, why? because he thinks he's king of the world after winning ONE MotoGP season.
Pedrosa seems to be the only real threat to Rossis title this time round.

Are you serious?
It is not Rossis private team you know?
I hardly believe that's the main reason why Fiat is sponsoring Yamaha.
I think they have thought about this a bit more than a bit of cocktail-relations.. And why would he be driving for Citroen if he was to rally?

And just for your information it's a rule in many types of racing, that last years overall champion has # 1, if the type of racing use fixed numbers throughout the whole season. But I bet it's optional in MotoGP.

Believe it, because that's the reason. Rossi is italian and so popular that Fiat wants to sponsor Yamaha because Rossi is riding for them. If Rossi wasn't in the Yamaha team Fiat wouldn't even have thought about sponsoring Yamaha.

maybe I came out a bit wrong. I am with you on this one, and I stated that in post #3. But, I find it hard to believe that Fiat is sponsoring Yamaha just because Rossi had a test drive with Ferrari, as Imakuni is saying.

1. Yes, I know that, I watch and visit lots of bike races and events, and the changing of numbers can be done between seasons (Rossi sees the #1 plate as unlucky).

2. A number of things make up the Fiat-Rossi relationship. First off, him driving the Ferrari F1 car is one, but also the fact he's an Italian superstar racing in a sport that in Italy is more popular than football according to statistics. It just makes sense to sponsor him, and maybe along the way they'll bag him as one of their WRC/Super 1600 or F1 drivers.

3. Rossi likes to suprise, so I think he wouldn't go for the predicted move to Fiat/Ferrari, instead, he'd scoot off to Citroen. He's friends with Loeb and Loeb is 'keen to have him (Rossi) join the team'. Obviously Rossi enjoyed the fact that the WRC king, Loeb, was saying this, and apparently showed interest in Loebs suggestions.

My personal opinion is that he should join Nitro Nori in World Superbikes, just to prove to all the speculation wrong. I'd like to see him ride a less advanced machine as this would really test his skills.
